Epson 9800 Colorburst RIP knocked out by 5.5

This happened last November with the first Leopard update and it's back. Epson 3800, 4800, 7800 and 9800 printers were sold by Epson as "Professional Editions" bundling Colorburst RIP.

Late last year or early 2008 the decision was made by somebody to not support updates for this bundle "because those printers aren't being made any more."

That's fine except the question comes up, "What about those of us who just bought the Professional Edition AND a 2-year extension on the 1-year warranty?"

Point being that the printers in that series do not print Postscript files unless they have Colorburst RIP. In addition they can't print anything longer than 90 inches. In my case both of those are deadly to my business -- remember that this is a PROFESSIONAL EDITION.

The cost of the upgrade paid to Epson was more than $1,000 and it was pretty much only the Colorburat Rip. The cost of the warranty extension was also hefty. So Epson and Colorburst are not taking care of their customers and they should be hauled into court and made to explain their policy.

As I understand it dealing with tech support folks, the Colorburst RIP was basically an EPSON product. They took the money and paid Colorburst, in other words, for the program.

The only solution last November was AppleCare backing me out of the upgrade of the time. then Colorburst came out with the last upgrade, to v.5.6, and it worked until Leopard 5.5 sank its claws into me again and Colorburst says "tough luck, felow" while directing me to their regular RIP for another $1,000 or so. Apple, meantime warned me to always read the information on the Leopard updates and not to install if there were something done about printing.

Well, I did that and there was nothing about printing but, apparently, should have been. One reviewer said there seems to be something about printing in the X11 parts of the update but all that is too advance for this old cowboy who merely wants his income to continue. What to do?

I wouldn't be surprised

Colorburst is neither an Epson nor an Apple product; you will have to take up your support issues with Colorburst directly. If you feel that a legal agreement is being broken by one or more of these parties then you should bring it to the attention of your credit card company, the courts, and possibly the FTC. Nobody here can do anything about it.

In the meantime, I'd suggest keeping your workstation on 10.4 or whatever else the last version that worked for you was. It's incredibly rare for a print shop to run the latest version of anything.
