It doesn't matter what the format is.

You cannot transfer .wma songs to your iPod in the first place. The continuing battle between Microsoft and Apple has caused lack of support for the .wma format on any Apple MP3 player - specifically, the iPod.
But like the other poster stated, you can attach album artwork to both AAC and MP3 formats. Be warned though - the artwork is actually attached to the file itself (AAC or MP3), increasing the size of each song. If you want to keep the size of your files to a minimum, artwork is discouraged.

Yeah, WMA is crappy & old, plus its from the devil himself. I see AAC as a sequel to MP3. MP3 II (The Revenge). lol
I believe iTunes for PC allows you to convert your wma files to iPod-supported formats. So no problem converting your library to AAC and then loading it on your iPod.
When you download or encode music in the future, if you have the option, use an iPod-supported format. The method above works fine, but will slightly decrease sound quality.

Yes, iTunes for Windows will convert unprotected WMA files.
