Some smoke alarms on the market look for an IR signal from a remote to enable a test mode (sets off alarm) or if the alarm is already sounding it will silence it. You should be able to use any IR remote from your TV or DVD player and get the same response.
This is a simple case of Demonic Possession. The Hordes of **** are known windows fanboys. They just hate to see you using your Apple Remote. Try an exorcism. You may also try hanging a few iPods over the front and back doors of the house. That usually keeps them away.
