Wacom tablet problem on OS X 10.4

My Wacom Intuos3 mouse/pen worked flawlessly on 10.3. I've been on 10.4.10 for awhile and then things started going flaky with the mouse, possibly after an adobe update. The mouse double-clicks everything when I don't want it to. So I updated to the most recent driver which didn't help and now I've lost the pen entirely from system preferences. I've since updated to OS 10.4.11 but that didn't help (although everything else seems to run better).

I followed the suggestion from Wacom's e-mail technical support -- basically uninstall, run permissions, and reinstall. I've deleted various files per suggestions on Wacom's Web site. I've unplugged the tablet. I'm not using any USB hubs. Nothing helps.

After deleting everything "Wacom," the tablet is still holding most of my old preference settings. Shouldn't I have to redo my preferences after uninstalling and deleting preferences? Also, I still have the older version on another partition of my drive that still has 10.3, but that shouldn't interfere?

I saw an older discussion about similar problems and wondered if anyone figured anything out. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yes.

Should not enter into it unless you've somehow linked/aliased to something on that drive to do with Wacom.

I think the Uninstaller didn't remove everything. It may or may not work to get AppDelete...

I assume you've done Disk Maintenance like Verifying the HD?

Hi judyah,

I had the same thing happen. After trying all the trouble shooting tips, (same as you), I bought a new pen from Wacom. It was the old pen... tired.

Whether this has anything to do with the 10.3 partition... possible a conflict with the drivers.

In System Prefererences you do not see: Ink ?? If so, check to see if your Handwriting Recognition is turned on.

One last idea... com.apple.ink.framework.plist Drag that file from your
/Users/Yourname/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop. See if your pen works. If so, send that .plist file to the trash and empty the Trash. Your Mac will create a new .plist file for you.

Thanks for responding.

I should clarify that the pen "works." But it's so erratic that I am afraid to use it for even a few seconds. It starts moving and opening files and I can't control it. As I mentioned before, the pen icon is missing in the Wacom Tablet preferences.

Handwriting Recognition is off.

I removed com.apple.ink.framework.plist and created a new one. No change. What about com.apple.ink.inkpad.plist and com.apple.ink.inkpad.sketch?

I'm now thinking more about a conflict with the 10.3 version on my other partition, especially because my preferences have never gotten wiped entirely.

Hi judyah,

You're welcome!

Since you've tried all the troubleshooting tips, maybe the "nib" is worn out. That can definitely happen... check out the Wacom site for information on that.

Also, I found this in the Wacom Knowledge Base:

Q. My tablet worked fine when I installed it into OS 10.2.7 or 8 but when I restarted it didn't work anymore. What happened?
A. There may be a problem in the kext.cache file that is preventing the tablet from working.
The following steps will correct the problem:
Uplug tablet from USB port
Uninstall driver using “remove tablet” script
Go into hard drive: system: and highlight library folder
Command+I keystroke gets info on the folder
Go to ownership/permissions… select it and unlock it
Change owner from “system” to “yourself (users name)”
Lock it back up. You will need to enter your admin password
Go into library folder and delete: “extensions.kextcache” and “extensions.mkext”
Empty trash
Highlight library folder
Command+I for get info
Go to “ownership/permissions” and unlock. Change back to “system”
Lock it again. Close window and restart computer
After system is ready. Plug in tablet
Install tablet driver and test the tablet. It should work normally when you restart as well.
Applies to these operating systems: Mac OS X

I honestly don't think this is a conflict with 10.3 on your partition if the pen worked as it should before with the partition in place.

If you use a mouse when you aren't using the pen, I'm sure you know this but I'll toss it in anyway, keep the mouse away from the tablet. I had the erratic behavior and it was my mouse too close. It never even dawned on me until found the tip in the FAQ's.

Maybe the "fix" above will help.

"but not now or who knows what will get written here : )" I understand LOL

I noticed on your profile you are running 10.4.10. Maybe that's a typo but if not, you might try updating to 10.4.11. Click the Apple logo top left in your Menu Bar, click Software Update ...

If you do this, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions after.
