From my experience, when you begin, you're really micro-grinding and if you keep re-loading your polishinig cloth you will only continue that grinding process. So when the cleaning cloth gets "dirty" don't stop. The abrasive should breakdown and leaving liberated metal on the cloth. At this point you essentially start rubbing chrome on chrome, and that's when you start polishing.

I tried this with both Brasso and Wenol metal polishes and chose Wenol polish because it is a paste and has more lubricant and I could extend the polishing process. Looking back on it, I could have also used a very tiny amount of oil to keep the process going and is one reason why polishing is such a long process. You won't get a perfect mirror smooth result but you can get close.

By the time I finished, I stopped caring so much about the scratches. I'll final polish when I finally get a case.

...Someone wrote that the brasso destroyed his nano...

If true, then that person probably used an electric buffer or some other forceful method.

For two-way radio displays and watch crystals, I place a small drop with a Q-tip(tm) onto the surface. I then gently wipe my thumb in a circular motion across the unit. This method hasn;t failed me yet.

Do not use too much - it will creep into crevaces where it would be difficult to remove.
