Disk Copy won't create an image from disk?

Whenever I try and use Disk Copy under Classic (In OSX 10.4) to make a disk image from a CD it always fails with an error about the disk image operation could not complete (-39) An unexpected end-of-file was encountered that may indicate the disk is corrupt or damaged.

Well, the disc isn't damaged, or corrupt. Plus it does it with any disc I try and copy, not just one... That can't be right. Isn't Disk Copy able to make images from a disc when its running under Classic? It can make a blank image okay, or an image from a folder, just not from a disc.

Ah, I see, and I'm afraid you may be at a dead end. I've just tried Disk Copy myself (versions 6.3.3, 6.4 and 6.5b11). None of them will image a CD in Classic mode. 6.3 gives me the -39 error; the two later versions give me a -1317 error and suggest using the CD as a coaster. (Really — in so many words!)

I suspect the problem may be that Disk Copy expects to be able to control the optical drive directly to read the CD's contents, but in Classic mode it's blocked from doing so by OS X, which reserves all hardware control to itself. The error messages about the CD are clearly spurious. They appear when DiskCopy runs face-first into the wall. DC doesn't have a more appropriate error message to display because Classic mode didn't exist when it was written.

So I think you're going to need to find a Mac that can boot into OS 9.x or 8.x and prepare the disk image on that instead of your own machine, which I assume from your post is not OS 9-bootable.

Ah, okay then, thanks for the help. The machine with classic on it can boot into OS 9, it is just as of right now I only have the classic enviroment installed from the 10.4 installation discs, which says in the readme it shouldn't be booted from. I didn't want to go through the hassle of patching up a bootable OS 9 system folder just to make an IMG of one disc. I might have to now though - I would make the image on the old 68k Mac I want the disc on, but due to it having an ancient 2x CD-ROM and an LC040 processor it has a habit of taking the entire day to read a disc and compress it into an image and even then it often fails with a read error right at the end.
