Oct 9, 2008 4:54 PM in response to Brett Lby Jeff Smith11,The customer relations people at Apple are only vaguely aware of any of this. After an hour they told me that only my logic board was replaced so I had to explain that the graphics processor is soldered to it. They called back to say that Apple would issue auotomatic refunds to those who paid for repairs in a couple weeks. -
Oct 9, 2008 5:37 PM in response to laundry bleachby Rocko!,!!!! I almost cried i'm sooooo happy. Good job Apple !!!!! -
Oct 9, 2008 5:47 PM in response to Jeff Smith11by PatrickEsq,I spent 56 minutes on the phone with Apple, working through three people, all very friendly, but each spending a good deal of time putting me on hold as they checked into things. However, I did just get a phone message saying my credit card refund for the repair had been processed.
I am pleased Apple has finally admitted the problem. Also, a few of you who ridiculed some of us who thought this problem was widespread and could be affecting replacement boards and later-manufactured machines... take a look at the date range on the Apple TS document... "These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008"
Suggestion: Have the TS2377 document ID available when you make the call. The reps I spoke with looked it up and read it while I was on the phone with them. -

Oct 9, 2008 11:13 PM in response to Peter Meiningerby joeaux,Outstanding. Good to see they're doing the right thing. Mine is fine but it's good to know I have another year if the 8600 goes south. Just make sure you keep ARD or VNC on! Again, if anyone from Apple is reading this thread, good job!

Oct 10, 2008 12:02 AM in response to joeauxby istara,Oh yay for Apple!
I somehow doubt they're the ones footing the final bill though... poor Nvidia. -

Oct 10, 2008 7:49 AM in response to iposiniditosby tymofi,It would be great to know what the actual repair entails? Different graphics card or a new 'fixed' 8600M GT? -
Oct 10, 2008 7:52 AM in response to tymofiby PatrickEsq,I opened my repaired machine when I got it back to put my current hard drive back in.
The new motherboard had a sticker which said "Rev. C," as I recall.
Someone with a failure should take a look before they send theirs in. Take some pictures. We could compare. I'd really like to know whether I have just started another 14-month clock, or whether it's really fixed. -
Oct 10, 2008 8:25 AM in response to Brett Lby Ashley Aitken,Great news!
Even better to know that Steve Jobs wasn't misleading us (with his response to an email regarding this problem) or even uninformed about the problem. Apple had been assured by Nvidia that none of the chips had made there way into MacBook Pros.
Thanks to Steve for being honest and for Apple finally coming through with this. I now have no problem (well, still a little problem with the high cost) in paying AppleCare for my MacBook Pro, now that I know it's not covering Apple with regards to this problem.
Now, how do I convince my Apple Reseller that I have had the problem (distorted and scrambled video on the screen) and how can I be sure I am will not be getting an exact replacement (same GPU on same motherboard) that will fail subsequently.
I'd like to hear a final guarantee that replacement motherboards/GPUs are issue free.
Cheers,
Ashley. -

I just had my Macbook Pro sent in for repair so hopefully the problem doesn't happen again.
