Apr 16, 2010 12:45 AM in response to hovering barnsby moonshot61,I got the logic board on my 17" hi-res (above) replaced with the Version 2 logic board, no idea if that's more reliable than the 1st, problematic logic board.
Re. my post above, I got my MBPro 17" back from the techs with the logic board replaced and working fine, but with dark grey blotches on the screen. Seemed to be dirt at first, but they did not come away with a soft cloth and on closer inspection appeared to be under the top TFT layer.
This was confirmed by the Apple store that handled my first repair. I took it into them the day after and they said that the blotches are indeed under the top TFT layer. They were a bit surprised by the problem and said they'd never seen anything like it before. To the point that they said they wouldn't know how to call the authorized techs and explain it to them. Which was another way of saying that I had to leave the MBPro with them again (I'd just got it back after 3 weeks!) and that they'd probably have to take it to the authorized techs to show them the damage. Which means at least another week. -
Apr 18, 2010 5:58 PM in response to Brett Lby clarkepich,I have a MPB 13" with a Nvidia 9400m graphics setup. I am having the exact same problem and taking it into the Apple store tomorrow. Luckily, I have an external monitor that I use and was able to switch the primary monitor to the external and use my MBP to read through these threads. I hope they get this fixed. -
Apr 22, 2010 9:52 AM in response to Matteo Borboneseby xili,I switched to Mac from PC three years ago. I have bought three Macs in my family (MacBook Pro, MacBook, and iMac) and persuaded a lot of my colleages and friends to use Mac. But since I got this defective NVidia card on my MBP, and Apple rejected for the free repair on the logic board. I start to doubt my decision now.
I personally think Apple should place a recall for this NVidia graphic card issue on all MBPs. Is Apple playing the "Toyota game" on this?

Apr 25, 2010 7:05 PM in response to xiliby cmikami,Add one more dead macbook pro display to the pile ...
The MBP has the problem NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor. It was manufactured within the recall dates. It does have a blank screen but the "share screen" does work.
It is now with Applecare. I provided the warranty extension information but I did not get a "warm and fuzzy" feeling from the "genius" about leaving it there for service.
Please stay tuned for my next post. I too do a fair amount of business with Apple. Let's all see how Apple is honoring their warranty repair pledge. -
Apr 27, 2010 6:12 AM in response to Brett Lby Adam Byra,Another dead, 2008 MBP here
Power-on
Fan spin.
Drives spin.
No chime.
No light on capslock.
Steady LED.
Took it to KRCS authorised reseller in Nottingham, UK, they said "sorry, it's a logic board, not nVidia graphics issue" and charged me £40 just for diagnostics. I'm planning to take it directly to Apple in Birmingham, maybe they will have a different opinion, but I don't have much hope left... -
Apr 27, 2010 10:15 AM in response to cmikamiby waystein,Cmikami. Look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10969044#10969044. Quite a few MBPs have problem only with the internal screen. Apple does not agree this is the NVIDIA issue.
Increasingly, they seem to reject customers and claim its just a Logic Board issue and not covered. -
Apr 29, 2010 6:44 AM in response to Brett Lby Kyle Harris2,Another dead MBP here as well. Don't know the technical details on mine...bought it in early '06, I think.
Went to bed last night with the MBP running, and woke up this AM to an unresponsive computer. Still on, but nothing happened when trying to wake it. Forced a shut down, then restart. Computer turns on, but no chime and a black screen.
I've read through alot of these posts...is this an nvidia card issue or a logic board issue? I guess I will have to take it to the Mac store this weekend. Ugh. -
May 9, 2010 1:57 PM in response to Matteo Borboneseby Magnat,Well, as i have said some posts back, my macbook pro 3.1 failed again from the nvidia graphics card, I took it to a apple store and they sent it to repair, when I went to pick it up they ad a bill (Warranty) of 750 euros of a new logic board, the macbook didnt work even a day and started to fail again, so, now he is back to apple for repairs, conclusion, my 1 year and 6 months macbook pro already had 3 logic board replacements, I just cant understand why a company as apple doesnt change the logic board for a ati graphic card one and solve the problem for once, is this possible? Cause its simply ridiculous that a 1,5 year old macbook is going now for the 4th logic board, is someone can answer me ill appreciate it, thanks!

May 10, 2010 2:11 AM in response to Brett Lby ThienK,My MBP was bought in june 2008 and sent to repair on 5th May 2010 with the following symptoms. As usual I close the lid of my MBP believing it would wake up from standby anytime, to my disbelieve not this time. It happened before that the screen just would'nt wake up from standby, but a force shutdown/restart would solve it.
- black screen, no reaction on extern screen either
- bright light when lid is closed, dime light when open
- no chime, just superdrive start up sound
- superdrive working fine
- no keyboard reaction, no capslock light, no sound when typing on keyboard
(tried to unplug power and battery and holding power down a fews seconds; without success)
Before the breakdown, Mac OSX often crashed (grey screen demanding to force reboot)usually on java games or videos.
I had my superdrive replaced severals months before, it just fail one of the few times I use it.
Suprisingly my Powerbook G4 is working better than my MBP even though I've mistreated it like ****, it's just woulnd'nt break down after 5 years heavy use and still going strong.
Is the new components in then nowadays MBP of poorer quality that of those old ones? Just wondering.

Jun 6, 2010 8:32 AM in response to Brett Lby Nybras,I bought my MacBook Pro in April 2008, I've never had a problem regarding its hardware or the software that came with it or I bought. Installing Snow Leopard was easy and the machine still worked a treat. A great machine despite me using Windows/PC for ever.
Friday evening I was using my MBP as normal, shut it down, returned about 2hrs later, turned on but not visualization (blank, dark, black screen) nothing showing. The little light at front of MBP was very dim, when turned on and rebooting it was bright for a time. I can hear the optical drive working and HD working too.
I thought, maybe if I stick in disc 1 to reboot the screen might come back
on as I thought maybe a failed driver?? I was wrong.
So, on Tuesday I will bring it to the Mac store and see if they can take it to get repaired, I'm lost without it and have to use this old PC/XPS from 2006 which I can't stand compared to the fast working, reliable (or so I thought MBP).
Fingers crossed they can fix it and not all is lost plus hope it doesn't cost much! -

Jun 7, 2010 8:14 PM in response to Brett Lby que1775,Hello,
I was wondering if anybody know the code the technician is looking for so that my MBP would be included on the recall. My MBP has all the classic symtoms of a dead GPU which is NVIDIA but they refuse to repair it because they said it does not have the code or something. While it clearly state on Apple website that wether my MBP is out of warranty and the problem is the NVIDIA GPU they would fix if for free. My MBP does boot up and do all the things, I can even access it thru the network but no Monitor and no ext. Display.
Please help me, they are charging me for the logic board which cost is almost the same as a low end MBP ($1200). Or please can somebody point me to someone who can help.
Thanks -
Jun 7, 2010 8:21 PM in response to Nybrasby que1775,Hello Bret,
We have the same problem. Exatcly the same. Apple just recall some MBP with NVIDIA GPU. It seems that it was the NVIDIA chip. I just send my MBP to where I boaught it but they say mine is not cover, but it should. Please let me know how things work for you. I was going thru the google and I stumble upon a TIP. perhap you can try this. install a external display then boot up, after the sound close the the display. According to the tip signal should come out on the external display. and when it does and finish booting up, open the display of the MBP and the the display should come out. My MBP is still with the vendor, so kindly inform me if this work. According to them is the sleep program of the chip thats is responsible.
Thanks -
Jun 9, 2010 8:11 AM in response to Nybrasby Nybras,So, after public holiday on Monday I brought my MBP to the new Mac store. I told them about the situation, said I had no cover since I first bought it.
They charged me €39. For a diagnostics test and said they'll call me once it’s complete and they can tell what the exact problem is!
I await the call and what the damage will cost me which I dread to think as if its anymore than €300 Euro well to **** with it, it can wait as this machine should not have broken down like that as its only little over 2yrs. old and to me its an Apple fault as I’ve never mistreated the machine in anyway. -
Jun 10, 2010 12:49 AM in response to Brett Lby nomadman,Another one bites the dust. This machine had two problems from the start, and within two years from purchase. The first one was the LCD producing vertical lines on the internal screen and the battery not fully charging. Both LCD screen and battery were replaced under warranty.
All fine and dandy until last week when rebooting on an upgrade, I lost output to internal display and external DVI display to my 24" Samsung LCD. When I tried to boot the machine, no chime, no video (internal/external), no keyboard light, and no light indicators. I took it to an AASP provider and they concluded that there was a problem with the logic board after not being able to produce a graphics code on test. I wonder how they came to that conclusion IF the gfx chip connector broke connection from the logic board due to a *possible and known* over heating issue. Of course they would have to conclude that the logic board is bad since the graphics chip is integrated to it. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I have to pay out of pocket for a logic board due to a manufacturing problem from the start.
I will take this machine to another AASP and try my luck on them producing a grfx error code in order to take advantage of the free replacement. If that doesn't work, expect Apple Support to here from me every day until my problem is resolved.
