I just experienced the exact same problem on my Macbook Pro 15" 2.4, which is bought in Sweden during July 2007. I'm currently heating my computer to see if the logic board is able to connect with the GPU. Hopefully this works so that I can securely remove some work-related document before sending it to Apple so the can fix the problem free of charge.

Is Apple's solution to this problem really working over time, or will be problem re-occur again after some time?

Same problem, only Apple is fixing my computer for free. NVIDIA card recall. They are replacing the logic board, as well. See if your computer qualifies -
Search MAC recalls, or try this site.

Hi Guys, I'm another victim of the BSOD. Had middle 2007 Macbook Pro 15" 2.4 Ghz.
Was struck by the BSOD last friday. My symptom was black screen after start-up, can hear the HDD and DVD-ROM initialising, no chimes, caplock and baclight not working at all.

Brought the unit to AASP in KL. The guy was friendly and the moment he saw my unit, he told abt the NVIDIA warranty. He did a diagnose and said he could not verified whether it was the NVIDIA GPU issue. He told me most like i will have to replace my Logic Board and qouted me RM 2,200 (USD 733).

Not wanted to so easily give up my money, i did some research on the internet manage to find out what is all abt. So what i did was on the unit and flip it up side down, i cover the vent with a cloth and the unit heated up and hopes it will reflow it. Only on the 3rd attempt i manage to get it booted up.

1st attempt was just one hour, 2nd attempt was 2 hours and 3rd attempt is 3 hours. It get real hot on the 3rd attempt, i had to let it cool down abt a hour before fliping it back to power it. I was so happy to hear chime and see the grey screen back on, was kinda giving up before i send the board to the oven.

Currently runnig time machines to back up everything. I think we need to properly manage the heat on this badge of macbook pro. If anyone needs help and advise pls feel free to email me. Will be glad to help out as i know how it hurts when our expensive investment failed us in just short period of time. Hopefully the new badge of macbook pro will not have this faulty design.

Have it too. On my 2007 15" MBP that has worked perfectly for over three years. I decided to give it to my youngest son for x-mas so I upgraded it - new firmware so he should get an up.to.date laptop.
I shut it down an wrapped it nicely.

3 days later on x-mas, tried to start it and NADA. Hear the chime, keybord light goes on but the screen is totally black.

Then i read about it here, seems to be a well known problem and I found a link just earlier in this thread that says apple will fix it.

    Thanx all who contributed.

Same here. Last week the screen went black but after one hour it worked again. Yesterday it went black again. Went through this post and up, up and away to the apple store. Nvidia problem and they are fixing it.

Yesterday morning, after having my laptop sleeping, I opened my MBP to find the BSOD. No chime, no glowing logo, etc. I took it in for testing, and they said that 1) since it wasn't running, they couldn't do the NVIDIA test, and 2) that my model was unaffected. He stated that the 2.6 ghz models didn't have the flawed chip. I don't understand why the 2.5 ghz 17" are affected and mine isn't. I had them send the MBP off to get a new motherboard for the $310 flat fee.

The same has just happened to me, put my machine to sleep & shut the lid friday, opened it up yesterday & a blank/black screen appeared. Luckily, I have a second monitor and it works on this, but only detects the one screen. My MBP is less than a year old so hoping it will get fixed cost-free.

Hopefully this will cover it also. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

To be honest, I'm shocked by the amount of MBP this is effecting dating back to 2007! Surely Apple should have recalled the product & got the problem fixed.

Mr Jobs, I'm not angry, just well ...more disappointed!!!

Well, looks like I'm far from alone. My early 2008 MBP started having problems last December. Blank screen, flashing screen, plaid patterns, the whole bit.
Wasted hours at the Genius bar for them to tell me they couldn't fix it because they didn't get the "right code" from whatever test.
At that point, the external display worked at least, so though it's no longer "portable" and I was extremely disappointed not only in the quality but how Apple were handling it. Basically if you didn't fork over for Apple Care, you're screwed.

Then suddenly, it stopped acting up. For about a month, it gave me no problems at all.

Until yesterday. Put it to sleep on battery power before I went to work. Came home, tried to wake it, and I get sounds, but nothing on the screen, not even a backlight.
Crap, I thought, it's back. Hooked up an external display, and... nothing.
And since then, I've been reading and trying everything in this thread, and no joy.
The disk is fine, I can screen share and see it, get files off of it, but it's completely unusable.
I'm half tempted to take it back to the Genius bar and say, "How about now?", but I just know it will be another couple hours of wasted time. The Apple Store is 45 minutes away.

Definitely not happy, but not sure what to do. I sure didn't expect this from a $1600 laptop. I thought Apple was all about quality. I understand defects happen, but you have to stand behind the product.

Ok guys here is a simple way to solve this issue.

Call apple care, they will ask for your serial number so they can identify whether your MBP is less than 4 years old. If it is, you are able to get the nVidia GPU problem fixed free of charge. You book an appointment in any Apple authorized repair place. They run a test and fix it. I believe they just swap the logic board. After few days you pick up the working machine. You say thank you and they say you are welcome. You walk away and pay nothing. You are happy.
    As simple as that.
I am through the phone call and drop the laptop on Monday.
    I will keep you updated.

I had the same problem a month ago.I went to sleep and close my macine(not turn it off just close the display). When i wake up a blank screen appears. As others have mentioned that here,i couldn't boot the machine(the drive is working but no chime from the start up),so the nvidia test couldn't being posible to do...
After a month,26/1/2011,i went to visit my MBP that lying on a chair on my room.I opened it and the display opened. The machine booted up for a little while.I restarted the machine after a while, but again the blank screen appears.
So my question is.What have happened and my MBP,after a month with no use, could have been booted?
