Oct 3, 2008 9:53 PM in response to Matteo Borboneseby totoros,Add me to the list. It happened 2 days ago. I had it connected to another monitor and used dual displays when it was put to sleep.
Tried clemson47's method and it worked once but never again.
I was able to borrow another Mac and connect via firewire to access files. When I go to the system profiler, it still displays it as NVIDIA and not GMA X3100 as others have experienced. Macbook Pro bought in June 07. This *****. -
Oct 4, 2008 9:35 AM in response to Brett Lby davide008,My MBP finally shipped out from the service center to the Apple Store. Will they charge me for the repair at the Apple Store? They never called me or anything while it was at Apple but said it could run $300-$1000. -
Oct 4, 2008 10:54 AM in response to Brett Lby pnbanner,Perhaps "digg"ing will help Apple respond to these issues: http://digg.com/apple/SantaRosa_MacBook_Pros_defective_GPUDisplay -
Oct 4, 2008 4:13 PM in response to Brett Lby Liquidcolor,My opinion is that Apple should take this up with Nvidia, if that isn't already being done behind closed doors. The words I got on Applecare call #2 is that this is a "known issue" and my machine is being repaired a few months out of warranty. It had also blackscreened four months into it's life.
Just a hunch but I don't think Apple will just let this go and there may be some official word in the not too distant future. The failure seems localized to summer 07 MBPro's as far as I can tell. -
Oct 4, 2008 4:40 PM in response to Liquidcolorby discostu514,so then are summer '07 logicboards being replaced with the same summer '07 logicboards like people are fearing/complaining/whining about or are the new logicboards of a newer generation?
either way at least i had the sense to get applecare, so it won't cost me a dime if something should go wrong! we'll see in january (roughly 14 months after i purchased my MBP) whether it happens like clockwork. if anything happens, i might argue for a new MBP rather than deal with logicboard replacements every year. -
Oct 4, 2008 11:53 PM in response to Brett Lby phlitekontrol,Add me to the list.
Bought my macbook pro SR in July 2007. I've had it in to apple care 3 times already before the video card crapping out for the ... second time. I've had my logic board replaced 2 times already, once for a different reason. I'm outside of my warranty (didn't buy apple care in time). Was on a budget and couldn't afford it at the time ...
Unbelievably ****** ... -
Oct 5, 2008 1:21 AM in response to discostu514by amymahon,discostu514, What do you mean +every year+? If you encounter the problem, your logic board replacements will be more frequent than every year. I've had 3 replacements in the last two months. Been without my laptop more than 50% of the time between now and when it first started happening. Even with warranty, it's a huge pain in the ***. -
Oct 5, 2008 1:27 AM in response to amymahonby discostu514,if that were the case, i'm covered by my applecare plan and i'd demand a brand new MBP.
at this point, there's likely a new model coming out soon enough, so if you have to get it replaced again, i would definitely push for a replacement of the next model which would have to be in the clear as far as this issue is concerned. -
Oct 5, 2008 10:32 AM in response to discostu514by Peter Meininger,When my 4th logic board failed within 2 months I called Apple Support (Austria) again and asked when they will finally run out of replacement boards from the same faulty batch.
They called back to suggest one additional replacement and promised that if it failed again they will replace the MBP. (anyone else out there running on logic board #5?)
They seem to be aware of an issue with this particular model but obviously wouldn't confirm when asked point-blank.
In an earlier post someone asked how to access a MBP with bricked NVIDIA chipset if Screen Sharing is not activated on the destination computer. I had SSH (Remote Login) enabled only.
If you own Apple Remote Desktop, here's one option which worked for me.
Install it on a working computer on the same network.
From ARD Admin create a 'Custom Client Installer' for your broken MBP with settings to start 'Remote Desktop', (don't create users on the 2nd config-screen) and specify access privileges for a local user (thats YOUR username on the broken MBP). Save the custom Installer on your desktop.
Launch Terminal and use scp to copy the installer to your MBP.
e.g.:
+scp -r /Users/{USER}/Desktop/Custom\ Remote\ Desktop\ Installer.mpkg {DESTINATIONUSER}@{DESTINATIONHOST}:/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/{DESTINATION_USER}/Desktop/Custom\ Remote\ Desktop\ Installer.mpkg+
see 'man scp' for details...
To launch the Installer ssh into your MBP, change to the folder where you copied the Installer and type:
+sudo installer -pkg "Custom Remote Desktop Installer.mpkg" -target /+
If all goes well Remote Management will start after a few seconds and you will be able to connect via Apple Remote Desktop.

Oct 6, 2008 1:56 AM in response to Kevenby zybx,My mbp is about one month after warranty. I took the mbp to repair center (CASE, Mongkok) but they replied to me that it will cost HK$9100 to replace the logic board so I'm just considering to buy a new pc. -
Oct 6, 2008 4:09 AM in response to Brett Lby caputxino,Lately I was having panic graphic problems, followed by a black screen when i rebooted.
http://caputxino.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/img_04211.jpg
A few hours later it worked up again. But yesterday my screen went black definately.
Same computer, same symptoms, same situation. Too many coincidences?. I'm waiting for a response. -
Oct 6, 2008 10:08 AM in response to caputxinoby hendsch,Well, another one here.
After trying your tips the whole day i gave up and called Apple Support.
After a 45 min. call, we found out that my MacBook Pro is exactly 66 days out of the warranty and they said, they are very sorry but they can't help me. But the best thing is, they have never ever heard of such an issue. Great! All of your problems doesn't even exist! At least at Apple…
I'm very angry and sad now. Lost a whole day (not to mention the weekend), i'm in the middle of a project and i have no idea how to solve the problem. -

Regardless of whether you have AppleCare, this becomes a horrible nuisance. I'm not sure about you, but I spent $3,000 on an Apple laptop because I needed it for important, business-critical work. The $310 I will pay for repair, which I believe is less than I would have paid for AppleCare, is incredibly irritating, but not the worst problem here. The big problem is that I have been without use of my Macbook Pro since mid-September. Apple has had it since 9/25 and it is still listed as waiting for parts. -
Oct 6, 2008 11:02 AM in response to PatrickEsqby discostu514,not saying it isn't a nuisance.
i agree - $3000 for a computer, you should expect it to last you for many years without having to get it repaired. My dell desktop, which i paid far less for, is 3 years old and all i've had to replace (aside from some minor hardware upgrades that were my own choice to do) is the DVD burner, which cost $40 at the time.
sure, $310 is less than an applecare warranty... but if you run into the potential problem of having to get the same part replaced every X amount of months and having to pay X amount of dollars each time, the cost of applecare is a far better alternative, don't you think? i don't know about you, but i certainly do not have the money to pay for a repair. so having the protection in place makes me feel a little more comfortable. -
Oct 6, 2008 10:36 PM in response to Brett Lby GiBB0,Hi,
Another one.
My son's July 07 MBP 2.2 died 3 weeks ago which sent me on the hunt for info, and here I am. He does have Applecare - bought it on the day his warranty was expiring, money well spent!
Next Byte in Brisbane Australia were great and had his machine with a new logic board back to him in 3 working days. As well as Uni and work, he does use his machine for playing WoW.
I have an April 08 MBP 2.5 Looks like I'll be buying Applecare too.
