How to adjust screen resolution before startup?

I inadvertently set my screen resolution to a refresh rate not supported by my monitor. I now have a blank screen that will not go away (using SwitchResX, not built-in displays panel). Have tried restarting, but it just starts up to a blank screen.

Is there a way to start in safe mode or similar, that would allow me to re-adjust this setting and get my desktop back?
