ignore update for an app

Is there a way to +ignore an update+ for an app, similar to the way Software Update does it?

I would like to stick with an older version and not see an update badge for it, either permanently, or at least not until the next new version comes out.

I noticed each time I went to my App icon, it had a number on it for updates. I didn't know why I was getting this since it seemed to re-install the app's I already have. Are these actual updates? I didn't realize that since it happens everytime I go to the App icon, almost as if it didn't recognize I already downloaded the apps.
Thanks for the insight.
