Keyboard shortcut for dialogue boxes

Is there a keyboard shortcut for selecting amongst the choices presented in a dialog box? For example, say I've typed a few lines into a new TextEdit document, then Quit the application. I'm presented with a dialogue box asking if I want to save the document. Choices are:
"Don't Save" "Cancel" "Save"

Is there a way to select among the choices using the keyboard (arrow keys? tab? jkl;?)?

MacBook Pro, Core Duo 2.0 GHz, Mac OS X (10.4.10), 2 GB RAM

Press the Command and D keys to choose Don't Save, Command and period for Cancel, and Enter for Save.

Hi,

personally I used 'System Preferences' - 'Keyboard and Mouse' - 'Keyboard Shortcuts' and have set the 'Complete Keyboard Access' to 'All' (hope I translated my German OSX right 😉 ).

That way the 'Full Coloured Button' is for the 'Return-Key' and the borderd buttons can be switched with the 'Tab-key' and activated with the 'Space-Bar'.

Regards

Stefan

Now we are on this topic... when I want to Quit Safari, if I have more then one window open, when I Command + Q, I get the dialog box: Are you sure you want to quit Safari? Do you want to quit anyway... is there a keystroke for quit or cancel on this ?????

TIA,
Carolyn 🙂

The "Quit" button is blue, so Return or Enter will do it. If the "Cancel" button has a blue outline, then Space will do it. If it doesn't have the blue outline, set "Full keyboard access" to "All controls" at the bottom of the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab of "Keyboard & Mouse" system preference.

If you want Safari to quit without asking, even if there are multiple pages, uncheck "Confirm when closing multiple pages" in Safari's "Tabs" preference.
