Single User Mode Doesnt Work!!

Hi. As of about a week ago or so, my Single User Mode does not work at all. In fact, it does not even load. I turn off my laptop, hold down Command and "S", and turn it on. It doesn't go to Single User Mode, it just boots up normally. Can someone help me?

Macbook Leopard, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

it's not the same as filevault password. you set and remove it using Firmware password utility on the leopard install DVD. you would know if you had set it up. your response clearly indicates that you didn't. that only leaves your keyboard as the possible culprit and as i said we can't help you with that. you'll have to take your computer in for repairs.

Its a shot in the dark but perhaps a PRAM reset could help. If your keyboard is not being recognized at boot then that could be a problem that might be fixed with a PRAM reset. Can you properly boot into "Safe Mode" by holding shift at bootup? If not then this could be an issue. Additional things you might try are resetting the SMC as well as doing a permissions repair on the hard drive.

I'm having the same problem. When I start my computer I get the flashing question mark folder. I can't start single user mode. I can still reset pram and start the computer in open firmware. So the keyboard isn't the issue here at least.
My aim is to get into single user mode so I can rebless the panther system folder. Because the last thing I did in OSX before restarting the computer was bless the Classic folder... and see where that got me.

That should work. I have found that whether you press the keys before or after the bell makes no difference.
Now, can you boot into the Safe mode (hold down Shift key on boot)? If that also does not work, you may have a keyboard recognition issue.
If the safe boot works, it's probably not the keyboard.
Reset both PRAM and NVRAM if you can. If the keyboard is really not being recognized, you may not be able to reset PRAM either.
