Whirring noise from right side of MBP

I have noticed a whirring noise coming from the RIGHT side of my MBP - near the right speaker and power button. Usually occurs when I open the lid to start using it and either goes away on its own or sometimes when I push down on the case. I am hoping it is just a fan (and not the hard drive). Any ideas?? Best way to fix it? The MBP is not under Applecare so would need to shell out the $$$ to Apple to fix it.

From what you've written- it's the fan blade catching on the housing (goes away when casing warms or you push it are the key indicators). It's nothing to worry about, but if it stops running then you will need to get the fan replaced.

The left hand one will probably run at maximum revs (6000 rpm) to compensate and Utilities like iStat Pro will report the right fan at 0 rpm.

I know this is not a question about the topic but I couldn't find the appropriate topic anywhere. I have a macbook pro that I bought new back in 2006. My neice dropped something on the top and cracked the screen. I actually haven't used it much bc I had a work computer but I have recently returned to film school and I need a mac. The point is that they are telling me it will be 800 dollars to have it fixed and I am wanting some mac users opinions as to whether I should have it fixed or get a regular mac book for just a few hundred more. Any opinions?

Seems like a lot of cash to fix a laptop screen. May want to find an independent retailer willing to fix it for less. If not, it would seem prudent to buy a new Macbook for a little more money. You'll probably end up with a faster processor and more hard drive space then you have now.
