It would be like installation of Firefox killing Apache, or iChat killing Bonjour. Suspicions aside, we need more info. What error do you get? Is there any other non-errored failure behaviour? Is it appearing in the scanner? Is it's status correctly shown before trying screen control? Are there any errors displayed vnc-server-side? Can you see your other remote computers in ARD? Have you tried removing it from the All Computers list and re-adding it? Is the OS and ARD up-to-date with updates on both sides? Can you enable and control the vnc server with an alternate client like CotVNC from the ARD Admin Mac? etc etc...
