Did you read this apple user discussion thread? Just replace the audio ribbon cable (apple part no. 922-8380) The part costs $30. The solution is easy and inexpensive. -
May 4, 2009 4:13 AM in response to Carsten.Rothby saturday21,the sound on my mackbook air has gone,it just wont turn on,what can i do? -
May 6, 2009 10:48 AM in response to CarverJoeby CarverJoe,Hopefully final followup. Replace the flex cable as others have indicated and my sound is back!! Hopefully it will stay. -
May 14, 2009 7:17 PM in response to Spirkoby nvs9,Hi,
Can anyone tell me from where can I get the audio cable that you mention? I looked at ifixit but its out of stock. Is there any other place from where I can buy it? -
May 17, 2009 4:49 PM in response to saturday21by xtravgnt,Hope your air is still in warranty, or be prepared to pay a hefty price (especially if you have any little dent) or replace the cable yourself.
This seems to be a widespread issue but one that Apple has no intentions of addressing in a recall or such. -
Jun 2, 2009 4:40 AM in response to Carsten.Rothby macbookproblems1234,I have the same problem and I went into the apple store yesterday and they said without warranty $300. Ridiculous, and the guy said this wasn't a common problem. I suggest we all call up apple and complain which I am doing later today. -

I have same problem
I have a similar issue, (1) I have no sound from either my internal speaker or from headphones, (2) the volume control does not appear in the menu bar, (3) opening garage band brings up an error code "Core Audio: Selected Driver not found. (-10202)", (4) in iTunes I cannot play songs (the tiny speaker icon to the left of on the song shows volume but the timeline at top does not advance), (5) same youtube issue (appears to start but stops after a second or two), (6) some other video (for example ABC full episode player) will play but no audio.
How does it solve? -
Jun 6, 2009 7:49 PM in response to nbirnesby MelanieAnn,Exact same here, just got back Macbook Air back from Apple Store, they replaced the logic board, and said it was fixed--husband brought it home-it's STILL got the same problem!!! The stupid Apple store has had this computer almost as much as I have. I have the Apple Care warranty, if it's not good for getting a lemon replaced, what's it good for? Apple needs to replace this POS, I paid too much, what with all the extras, to have to put up with this and the other problems I've had. -
Jun 8, 2009 4:51 PM in response to didmeby xtravgnt,Pray that you are still in warranty if not get ready to pay out the rear for the repair. Either that or try to find the cable and replace it yourself if you can find anywhere that actually has the parts in stock. -
Jun 16, 2009 10:35 AM in response to xtravgntby asch,I had the same problem for days...no volume output, no volume icon, no iTunes songs...
Just install Mac OS DVD's and format your hard drive (the one from the old computer). Then use Migration Assistant from the backup you should have. That's all. Now my speakers and iTunes are working. -
Jun 20, 2009 1:33 AM in response to Carsten.Rothby h4nsen,I've just found another possible solution for this annoying problem: http://www.macriot.com/article.php/20080718032528619
Haven't tested it until now. -
Jun 20, 2009 2:21 AM in response to Carsten.Rothby h4nsen,Ok. This hint from above didn't work out for me. Instead Repairing permissions + reboot did the job. Now everything's working as if nothing ever even happened. So no hw, but sw issue in my case. -
Jun 21, 2009 7:37 PM in response to h4nsenby mullettcentral,Arghhhh! I'm so miffed about this. The same thing happened to me today. Right after doing a software update. Now I can't get any sound to work.
@ h4nsen - (I'm a bit of a noob) what does "repairing permissions + reboot" mean?
Thanks
