This may sound so stupid but the suggestion to go and upgrade my quicktime has been mentioned several times. So I did the upgrade but when I click on Quicktime it asks me to purchase it. Now the stupid part is...I thought it came with the software for my mac. My 1 & 2 discs have quick time on them. Will Imovie not allow me to use the built in camera unless I purchase quicktime? Imovie worked with the built in camera a month ago.

What version of quicktime is installed on your computer now?
  • Christine Vrees Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
    leopard 7.5.5

Yes, a version of quicktime comes with your computer system. And, if you just upgraded to 7.5.5, that is the latest version. To answer your question, the iSight camera should work with whatever quicktime version came with your computer AND all the upgrades. I do know that some people have had issues with QuickTime 7.5.5, but I don't recall anyone reporting a malfunction of iSight with it.

Apparently, the computer not recognizing its own camera is a known problem. See this post with many responses: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1654083&tstart=0

Hi again. I looked at the links you posted and there was great info but quick time is now asking me to register. Quick time came with the computer so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it from the disc and still I am getting asked to register. Again a stupid question but is there a registration code someplace within this system? Thank you so much for all your help. There was also a mention of a PMU reset but I can't do that because I don't know what they are talking about. I Love this Mac so much more then the PC's I had been using for 15 years but I just don't know my way around.

You wrote that your version of QuickTime was Leopard 7.5.5. Leopard is Mac's Operating System, known as OS X, version 10.5. The latest QuickTime is version 7.5.5. That probably is not the version that would have come with your computer unless it is very new. This QT version came out fairly recently.

You don't have to register quicktime for the basic features to work. It is a free download or it comes with your computer.
You do need to register it if you have upgraded to QuickTime Pro to get the registration code, or you will not be able to use all the Pro features. You can determine which version is now installed by clicking on QuickTime Player in Applications and then, if it opens a screen with different options to see shows, recordings, etc. click once on that to select it and then go to the menu bar and click on Quicktime Player and from the drop-down menu, select 'Registration' and see what it says. Mine shows the blue Q logo with a little sign on it saying 'Pro' since I have purchased QuickTime Pro. Could your son have done this? Maybe there is an email somewhere with the registration code that was sent to him.

So, are you saying that when you get iMovie open now, and try to get it to see the iSight camera that you are getting the message that you need to register QuickTime? That is a bit strange.

Hi again!!! Ok I opened the Quicktime and it is version 7.5.5 (249.24). I am not sure what came with the computer as it was suggested that I reinstall Qtime from the disk then upgrade. When I open the Qtime and then click qtime and go to registration, I do get the blue Q to the right side of the new window and then my options and next to that is a place for me to register, the tabs at the top are browser, update, streaming and advanced. when the qtime opens I can not do anything with it all the options from the top menu bar say PRO next to them.
Yes imovie will now open but when I click on the camera icon to record it says "no camera connected" so I guess I am back to my previous question how do I get imovie to recognize the built in camera. Do I really need to even have quick time installed for that??? Again Beverly thank you so much for your help and patients. My son will not be home for thanksgiving and his brothers and I really want to send him a video.

I don't have QuickTime 7.5.5, so I don't know what its menu options are. Usually, if you have quicktime, but not pro, the pro options are grayed out. If you have pro and haven't registered, you cannot use the pro options.
My menu bar options for my version of qt don't have pro in front of them.

For the camera, have you tried the suggestions in the threads I linked before?
  • Christine Vrees Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
Yes I tried all the suggestions in the links you had posted and nothing seemed to work. I am thinking I Need to take the computer to an apple store to have it fixed...What do you think??
  • Beverly Maneatis Level 5 Level 5 (7,150 points)
Yes, maybe it is time for some Apple tech help . I don't seem to have any further answers Let me know what they say/do to help you.

Hi Beverly, I found some information that might help me but now I have problem with that information thought maybe you could help, you being such a smart cookie and all. The suggestion to downgrade my QT to 7.5 to get isight working seems to be the answer and from what I have read I need to force install/download because I am using a newer version. I went to the site and got the 7.5 version clicked the download and followed the onscreen instructions but it tells me "can not install there is a newer version installed in Macintosh HD" I tried to trash what was there but it will not let me. Any idea's??
