BMW iPod Adapter and 4th Gen iPod nano charging issues

I have been using my 3rd gen iPod Nano with my BMW iPod adapter with no issues. I recently purchased the 4th gen Nano and my BMW iPod adapter no longer charges the unit. I have experienced the same incompatiblity with my car charger that worked with the first gen iPhone and now it says "This accessory is not compatible with this model" with my new iPhone 3G.

Did apple change the charging technology on their new models? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Panasonic CQ-C7303U car radio that has an iPod adapter as an accessory that I bought for the radio over a year ago. I've used it with my 5th Gen ipod and my 3rd gen Nano, and it charged them just fine. But as eveyone else (apparently) has experienced, both the 2nd Gen Touch and the 4th Gen Nano (I currently have the 16GB version) has charging issues with a number of "accessories". I can still control the ipod through the stereo and it sounds fine when played through the stereo, but the only thing it WON'T do, is charge the ipod. I use it more for playing music in my car than anything else and I kinda relied on this charging so I wouldn't have to plug it into my computer as often...oh well. I'm still trying to find the exact "technical" reason for this, but I read another discussion where, apparently, something has changed in the ipod charging circuit that only allows the use of the 5V USB power circuit, and not the 12V kind that is used in these radios and other devices that can charge the ipod. (I'm guessing it could fry the battery or circuits or something if it did try to charge the ipod) I've been wanting to get a new radio for a few months now, but since this problem has popped up with the new ipod, I'm going to wait until after they release some new models that can charge these new ipods.

All iPod used to be able to charge off the old Firefire power inputs on the dock connecter. Even though they removed firewire syncing from the iPod line years ago, they left the ability to charge from Firewire. Firewire generally is about +12V where as USB is +5V.
Most manufacture of automobile iPod accessories chose to use the Firewire power input pins because you could charge directly off the car's +12V electrical system and didn't have to convert down to +5V.
New iPods, including the new Nano, no longer can charge off the old Firewire power pins so you for those systems that charge an iPod in the car off Firewire power, you are out of luck.
I think BMW does have some sort of alternate cable you can buy to get charging back with the new Nano and older BMW systems.
Cheers,
Patrick

My old nano worked just fine until the click wheel died exactly 13 months into ownership. It charged just fine in my Mini. Repair was apparently not an option at Apple, so I bought a new ipod. Thought 4th gen was cool -- but it's not charging in the car, and I since use it only in the car, so it's pretty much always empty. Car is 2006 Mini Cooper - not exactly an 'old car stereo'.
Cable is part of car (runs into the wall of the glove compartment) - probably not easily exchanged and my Mini dealership has not heard of another cable as of yet. Stupidly had this new nano engraved, or it would have gone back in a hurry. I was already upset enough when the 'yellow' turned out to be some ugly gold.
Well, Mini is still looking into it and might yet find a solution. They are a bit more responsive than Apple (ok, so their products are a bit more pricey too).

Hello,

I am in a similar position with my Jag XF. My 4th gen Nano is connected by a short cable which goes from the car (20 pin socket) to the iPod dock connector.

I called Jaguar who are aware, and they told me they are a "made for iPod" registered company. They were told about this change, they say, 1 day before the 4th gen came out. I struggle with this as this change affected iPhone 3G users too.

I think the problem is due to the configuration of pins on the connector to the car (plus the fact that Appple have changed the wiring connections for charging), and if the connecting cable can be redesigned to allow for this, thousands of people will become happy again.

In the meantime, I have to bring the iPod into the house more often to charge, but it means I update podcasts more often 🙂

If Jaguar cannot offer a new cable gratis (Apple won't) I might buy the Scosche Passport product that crosses the wiring over. I am sure our many disgruntled friends on this forum will let us know if they find this small device solves the problem caused by Apple.

There must be millions of disgruntled users, and as more millions buy new Nanos towards Christmas (if anyone has any spare cash) and find they do not work as well with their hifi, or clock-radios, sentiment towards Apple may well change.

Tony

I also battled with keeping my new ipod charged up. I had 2 accessories that would charge my 2nd gen which of course no longer work with the 4th gen. I am completely dissapointed in Apple for making that change without warning or notice. I ordered the "passPORT" from Scosche Industries, Inc. and just received it yesterday (it was on backorder since early October). IT COMPLETELY FIXES THE PROBLEM! It is an adaptor that works with both my countertop ihome and my FM transmitter car charger. I will mainly leave mine in my car but when i want to I can use in my ihome. THANK YOU SO MUCH SCOCHE!!!!!!!! Shame on you Apple. http://www.scosche.com/products/productID/1667

I have a 2009 3-series with the iPod adapter and while it plays music from the iPhone 3G it does not charge it. What has not been noted in this thread is that the phone shows that it is charging but it does not actually change charge state. I bought the Passport adapter (link shown below) and it did not work. The phone showed the "not charging" icon with that adapter installed. Question to the original poster: does your iPhone 3G show the charging icon but not charge (like mine)? If so, then we definitely need an alternative solution.
