Original G4 15-inch Power Adapter Caught Fire

Hi,

I have a slight problem, the power adapter that came with the Laptop has caught fire, and took with it a part of my desk as well as the power bar. Now, I still have the unplugged Power Adapter, and I'm wondering what to do with it. I want to take it to Apple to get it replaced but I'm not sure if they will. Any suggestions on what to do?

Powerbook G4 15', Mac OS X (10.4.10), 1.5 GHZ w/ 1GB RAM

mine just did this also ...however i think it was gonna happen sooner or later as ive noticed the insulation around the connector is split and the metal wire inside is exposed!! i managed to pull it out as soon as i saw the smoke lol but im a bit worried whats happened inside my powerbook!! will it still work if i just replace the adapter or is there more serious damage???

^ in answer to the post above ...in my experience apple will try and wiggle out of repairing it for free so expect to be charged or just buy a new one instead mate!

First off,

I have to thank all the kind and generous people who volunteered their time to help me out with this problem. I'd also like to thank <edited by host> from Apple Technical Support who personally e-mailed me (out of the blue mind you) to talk to me over the phone about this issue.

Okay, so here's what happened:
After going on the phone with <edited by host>, he suggested that the wire may have been bent into a position that was causing strain. Nonetheless, he said that things shouldn't catch on fire and burn parts of desks. So I'm receiving a new PowerBook Power Brick with a fixed cable to replace the old frayed one.

Advice to others who get this problem: DO NOT take it to the Apple Store to get a new one, they don't know how to address the problem, rather, contact tech-support. Also, if you do have a bent cable, please unbend it (safely) so that this problem will not happen to you.

BGregg, thanks for the link to the Class-Action Lawsuit, but I think Apple Inc. and Apples' community have steered me into the direction to not press charges on this issue.

Hi,

I had the exact same problem with my power adapter for my powerbook ...the **** thing started sparking and then there were flames!! could've caused a house fire if i hadn't been there to disconnect the power!!!

im really annoyed with Apple as i took the adapter into an Apple retailer here in Manchester, England (they laughed) and they said all they can do is sell me another one for around £50 ...no apologies and no FREE replacement! this shouldn't have happened its only a couple of years old!

i read the advice above from i.nunchuck but in terms of contacting Apple support technicians here in England how can i do that? none of the links i've found are for a direct email/link to any powerbook technicians!

ive also looked at the link from BGreg ( http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/02/applesettles_class_action_suit_over_faulty_notebookadapters.html) and found my powerbook is covered by the settlement but how do i go about getting my replacement adapter here?? is it the same mathod as in the usa?? how long will it take for the application to be successful??

im absolutely disgusted at the way Apple have treated this matter with me so far!

my powerbook is no longer under warranty and i don't have Apple Care either! does anybody know what i can do??

thanks

Renshaw: Google "Powerbook G4 AC adapter" (in quotes) and you'll find all sorts of third-party options available at prices as low as $29.95 USD.

I have no idea whether non-US residents are eligible under the US class-action settlement, but if I were you I'd just buy an adapter and get on with my life.
