This is my first ipod, and i dont really know how much the music file size affects the amount u can store but this is insane, the 4g should hold about 1000 but after adding a couple of albums my iTunes says 153 songs, 9.6 hours 3.52gb. im guessing the only thing it could be is when i burned songs from cd's to my computer i burned it with a better quality. is there anyway i can fix that, or could it be something else? thanks

You'll need to re-rip your cd's at a lower bitrate. On the iTunes preferences window, go to Advanced and in the Importing tab, select AAC encoder and below that select your bitrate. Anything from 128-192 should be good enough and give you a smaller file size than what you have now. Remember though, that the 1000 song claim, assumes song files that are about 4 min long and encoded at AAC 128kbps. Anything that deviates significantly from this will affect the number of songs that'll fit in your nano.
Am having the same problem with my Nano 4Gb. Tried following your advice above, under Advanced I don't have anything saying Importing tab? Any other suggestions for me? If one goes ahead with your advise above, would this help getting closer to the 1000 songs?
