Burning: device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media?

Hey Folks.

In my previous post here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8222443#8222443 I posted that I was unable to burn anything. I was using toast, now that I deleted toast (thinking that was the cause of it everything) I ran disk utility and got this error;

*The disk can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media*

What does that mean? It's clear to me that I'm unable to burn anything, however my superdrive does read the CD's just not burn.

Secondly - how can I fix this issue? Is there something I can do myself? Maybe run a repair, i'm not sure - just giving out ideas.

Please let me know.
-Joey

I recently tried to back up my iPhoto library to Memorex printable DVDs and I got the same error message. The optic drive is fine and will burn other brands and types of media. What I find interesting is that I tested the Memorex printable DVDs on my husband's computer, which is a first generation iMac, and they work fine. I then inserted the burned DVDs into my computer(Alum, Intel) and they're not recognized. I took them to the nearest Apple store . . . the burned DVDs work in the geniuses' laptops but not the Alum Intel machines out on the floor. I suspect that the Alum Intel computers have issues with this brand of DVDs. I hate to waste money and contribute to overloading the landfills, so I plan to use transfer my iPhoto library to my husband's computer and make backup copies using the junk DVDS. I'll back up my iTunes library on my computer by using Verbatin DVDs.

I found the information below - did it and it worked for me!

I cannot believe it, but this crazy fix (on a 24" Core 2 Duo iMac) worked for me:

Open System Preferences.
Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
Close System Preferences
Restart computer

Incredible! It works! This is now at the top of my list for unbelievably arcane fixes...

I have been having the same issue with my mac book pro, the same error message, i've tried using all different types of make of cdr, verbatim, sony ect, it seems to be a hard ware issue. obviously a common fault wonder if they will recall and repair free of charge. oop's how silly of me to think that people who sell you stuff might actually care about there customers.

I just did mate.

I went to the store today and bought Memorex CD-R 700mb... any thoughts?

I use Memorex CD-R 52/700/80 all the time without as single failure.
I also use Memorex 4/700/80 CD-RW with equal success.
