The location of safari's cache has changed under OS X 10.5. It is now in /var/folders/lZ/... where you will see a bizarre looking folder name. Open that folder and you will find a /-Caches-/ folder. Safari's cache is in that folder along with most other Apple caches. The strangely named folder may be different on your system. I believe this was done for security purposes in order to make it harder for malware to find the cache files.
The /var/ folder is invisible. From Finder select Go->Go to folder... and enter /var/folders/lZ/. I have deleted Mail.app's cache from here in the past to solve a crash problem. However I doubt you can retrieve individual files from that cache. Yet another reason OS X is inherently more secure than that "other" operating system. Good luck.
I could be mistaken here, rydward, because I've never tried to do that.
But I don't think it's possible to find them in the cache.
If you had not cleared the History, you could backtrack to try to find the site again.

You can also empty it view the main Safari menu on the top of the screen.
If you really want to find it,
it should be Home>Library>caches>com.apple.Safari.
I may be experiencing the same thing... When I log into places like yahoo or espn, close the window, then re-open... I have to re-log back in. Nothing is being stored in the cache.
