I have a pc version of some software I need to use. I run live sound and I use a console that has a virtual editor to do programming from home. It's PC only. I was reading through this thread and was wondering if Windows has to be installed to run pc software or if I only need the VMware software? If I don't have to, I don't want to run Windows at all.

The VMware is only a virtual shell that supports Windows, and other OSs. But you also need the Windows software.
On the other hand, consider Wine (Windoze Emulator) a free download. It runs many Winders programs directly on the Mac without much fuss or ado, but not everything.
But you do not need Windows installed. This emulates windows proper allowing the running of some winders executables directly on the Mac.
