Have you tried restoring the iPhone? Does this happen with just 3rd party apps or all of them (Apple included)? Or have you tried removing the programs in iTunes and reinstalling them? More details would help.

If the phone continues this behavior, you may have to attempt a full restore. To do this, sync the iPhone with iTunes, and click on the Restore button. It will reinstall the iPhone OS and afterwards, it will re-sync all of your data back onto it, which may take awhile depending on how much space you have used. iTunes should have backups of the phone's preferences and other things, so you shouldn't worry too much about resetting all sorts of settings. Good luck.

My crapPhone had this same problem. Not only that but also the screen would turn black all of a sudden. It'd also freeze up all the time. And finally the 3G never worked.

An Apple tech support rep. told me to do just that. Run a system restore and not only ITunes 8.1 deleted all the coontent of my phone but it also was not able to restore back up data.

My advice, get another phone and wait 'till apple actually builds an IPhone that truly works. The idea of the IPhone is definitely nice but it's not even close to what it is supposed to do.

Sure you didn't get a defective device? I've had to restore my phone once, and that was because I was installing several apps in rapid succession while going in between other programs at the same time (with 2.0.2). Full restore went smoothly and ironically, the next day 2.1 came out and fixed all of the bugs that may have been present. I felt so unlucky to have to restore it the day before the upgrade. 😟 Anyway, the 2.1 update delivered; now I get battery battery life and increased signals, so I've got everything working as advertised here. My iPhone works perfectly so if you still have yours, take it to the Genius Bar and have them look at it.

The restore process worked very well on my Mac. The software download took only a handful of minutes, and once installed, the phone was back to optimal performance. I even got the last app I was downloading to load with no issues, so that was good. 😉

Well, that's exactly what I told the Apple rep. "I've had my phone for only 20 days and it has to be defective." The rep told me what I wrote at my previous posting (above) and as I headed back to the store very frustrated they gave me 2 simple options. Deal with it or return the phone while within my 30 days.

Well, needless to say that was a no brainer. Good thing I still had kept my Verizon phone. Too bad Verizon phones don't even come close to the IPhone but at least their customer service actually helps people (unlike AT&T) and their LG phones actually work.

1st Apple/AT&T experience and it left a terrible impression and a very bad taste in my mouth.

Good for you that you IPhone works though... I wish I was that lucky

If you were getting defective hardware and poor service, then you had plenty of reasons to abandon ship. 😉 20 days? They should still replace it if it was for that short period of time. The thing comes with a 1 year standard warranty. I got mine at an AT&T store. Activation took awhile (they were activating iPhones one at a time...) and transferring numbers and contacts from the old Sprint SIM cards was slow, but everything has worked right out of the box. The AT&T employees were really helpful though; the guy that reserved our iPhones came to the store on his day off just to help us switch over. That was nice.

Sounds like the rep or Genius that you talked to wasn't in a particularly good mood. With Apple tech support (or with any company's support really) you just have to get lucky and hope you get to talk to the right people. Some Geniuses I have spoken to have been really helpful with some past issues, while others didn't really care. For the most part, I've had good experiences with Apple support. Also, AT&T has pretty good support for all of their services; every time our DSL or home phone service has a problem, they are quick to fix it. A little while ago, some DSL lines quite working, crippling our home phone and internet services. I think AT&T sent out a repairman the next day, and that was the end of it. Good support there. Well good luck with Verizon then.

I had the exact same problem and couldn't figure out why. Only with 3rd party apps. I had a non-jailbroken non messed with 3g iphone and was only downloading free apps from the app store. Should be no problem, right? 🙂

I could delete the apps, reinstall them and they would be fine for a few days, maybe a week. And then all of the sudden, try to open them and they would just close.

Turns out there was a problem with the authorization of my iTunes on the computer I was syncing with (this is on a windows one if that matters). And the apps wouldn't stop working the first or second time I synced, just eventually they stopped working, synced a couple times between when they were installed and when they stopped working. Anyway...

Connect iphone, let itunes open up, let it sync. Click on Store and then click on "Deauthorize Computer". Let it do it's thing. Then go back (click on Store) and "Authorize Computer". Forced the iphone to sync again. All the sudden all my apps now ran.

Of course now it thinks I have 2 computers which are authorized, but my understanding is you can have 5 and once you hit that, once a year, they let you go and deauthorize all of them and start authorizing the computers again.

Yup - I have restored mine twice now; once because of a hard crash with 2.0.2 installing apps, and secondly as I wanted to try jailbroken firmware then put it back to normal (to prove I could LOL) and in both cases it JFW.

Perfect restore of firmware, perfect restore of all my settings, contacts, apps etc. etc.

Just about the only bit that was a PITA was that the icons weren't in the same place on the home pages and needed to be rearranged, but other than that the process was completely painless for me.

This was with iTunes 8.0 on Mac OS X 10.5.5 mind you. Maybe it's the Windows iTunes that's deliberately crippled LOL.
