Sound Distortion

Recently i have noticed that there is a "burbling or wind like background distortion" associated with all my itunes music. This distortion is noticeable when playing through high quality amplified speakers rather than earphones and is most noticeable in quiet paasages of classical music. I have isolated this to the itunes library on my laptop by testing different speaker attachments and it appears on the ipod when synchronised etc. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

Are you using good quality headphones? I am really surprised you can't hear the problem with them if the problem is in iTunes itself. Normal sound with headphones suggest the problem is not in iTunes or the sound card.

On the other hand if the problem is also present in an iPod synced to that library, it appears to contradict that. When you sync your iPod to the laptop, are all the files on the laptop copied to the iPod?

I am just wondering if any of the playback preferences in iTunes affect the iPod - I am not sure about that myself. It might be worth looking at the playback tab in your preferences and unchecking sound enhancer and sound check if they are checked.

Ever since upgrading to iTunes 8, I've had distorted sound when playing any song added to itunes since the upgrade. The older songs seem to be ok. However, when I play the songs that sound distorted in iTunes on ANY other audio player on my MacBook, the sound of the song is great. The problem for me is definitely within iTunes. ...Also, I unselected Sound Enhancer and Sound Check, but it didn't make a difference.
This is not the only thread about this problem. I hope it gets sorted out soon, or I'll be substituting iTunes with another application. After all, iTunes can offer all the bells and whistles they can turn out, but if it doesn't SOUND good, so what?!
