The charge function included with your Scion is via firewire, which the iPhone 3G does not support.

For a number of years, Apple has been gradually removing support for firewire with iPods followed by the iPhone, and 3rd party manufacturers of related iPod devices have been aware of Apple's direction with this since day one, but most or many didn't make any changes to charging via USB only.

At first, iPods were synced and charged via USB only. This was followed by Apple adding support for syncing via USB along with charging via firewire.

The first generation iPhone supports charging via firewire, but Apple finally dropped support for this with the iPhone 3G, which will be the same for all future iPod models/releases. Apple removed the firewire pins from the iPhone's 3G's dock connector, so the only way to charge an iPhone 3G is via USB.

Check with the provider to see if they have an adaptor available, or maybe a 3rd party has one available.

I have a 2008 Scion xD and my new i-pod works but will not charge. I was told by Corp. Scion that this was a i-pod/Apple problem not Scion’s. Kevin went on to tell me that Scion did not know Apple was changing anything, and Scion will not be doing anything to fix this and I should call Apple. Everyone needs to call in to Scion and let them know.

For one, that is a suggestion not a requirement by the auto manufacturer.

Secondly, they will only do that under the safety recall notice guidelines. If the vehicle becomes a fire hazard from the iPod or iPhone and the car stereo ignites in a ball of fire as the cable is the cause of it, then it would be swapped from FireWire to USB. Otherwise you are talking millions of dollars paid for users requests when nothing is wrong with the vehicles.

whats more LIKELY the case, is that Scion said: "these are the iPod cable specs, make it to these specs" (which at the time, supported firewire based charging). Scion doesnt come up with the specs, apple does. i'm sure scion used a vendor, and then labeled it with their own part #, cuz last i checked, Scion is a car company, not an electronics company.

so since then, the 2nd gen ipod touch and iphone 3G have been released, which do NOT support firewire based charging. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
which is why you're facing the issue you face now. i would look into the solution deggie provided.
