Scrollwheel issues in iTunes 8

Fresh Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit installation - only a week old. All hardware drivers installed and PC is working well. Mouse is a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000.

Recently purchased and iPhone, so I've installed iTunes 8 yesterday. It mostly works but there is one thing driving me nuts...

The scroll wheel will not scroll unless an spin the wheel quickly. When I spin quickly, it jumps a large distance per scroll. I've tried adjusting any scroll related setting in the Mouse control panel with no change.

The mouse works normally in other programs.

What can I do to get the mouse working???

Similar issues. Vista 32-bit with iTunes 8 and Microsoft wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0. Scrolling in iTunes is very haphazard and sporadic. If I give the mousewheel a really good spin the list of songs will jump sporadically, otherwise the mousewheel has no effect. I have separate bluetooth mouse that works fine with iTunes. I'm also setup on a multi-headed display and I've read that this was a problem with previous versions of iTunes.

No clue how to make it work other than switching the mouse out.

Same here. Running Windows 7 64-bit Beta (build 7000) and just installed iTunes 8. Using Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0.

How in the world can a SOFTWARE company with Apple's experience screw up such a simple thing in one of it's most popular programs?

I guess it's a good thing I use iTunes for ONE THING ONLY...syncing my iPhone.

I don't see it mentioned in most posts, but I wonder if this is a 64-bit issue?

Some months ago I purchased a laptop for my wife, it is running Vista, I purchased a Microsoft wireless mouse (made for laptops) at the same time. I had nothing but problems with the mouse, looked on the Microsoft website and downloaded a patch.

Even after the patch the mouse was very erratic, it would sometimes lose the connection, run choppily etc etc.

I thought it was fauly but in the end I purchased a Logitec Wireless Mouse for A$49 (made for laptops). Guess what it runs flawlessly, never misses a beat did not even have to install any drivers. Ironic when a company's product will not run on its operating system.

Well Stubchain, I had fully intended to sit down here and poo-poo your response, but as I started typing, I decided to try out your theory. I have a few other mice in the house, so I decided to give each of them a run at iTunes 8 on Windows 7. Here are the results:

Wireless Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 : very hard to scroll
Wired USB Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical : doesn't scroll at all
Wired USB HP generic scroll mouse : scrolls fine
Wireless Logitech MouseMan Optical : scrolls fine

My conclusion is that it must be a MS mouse driver issue (probably 64bit), but it's only seen in a few applications, as I've used this mouse for nearly a year on XP Pro with iTunes 8.0.0.35 without incident.

So, time for a few more tests:
1. I checked my new XP Pro installation, and it too is running iTunes 8.0.2.20, and my MS mouse scrolls fine. This pretty much assures it's a 64bit OS issue.
2. I deinstalled the Windows 7 Beta IntelliPoint drivers, rebooted; MS mouse still does not scroll.
3. I installed the Windows Vista 64bit IntelliPoint drivers, rebooted; MS mouse still doesn't scroll.
4. I reinstalled the Windows 7 Beta IntelliPoint drivers, configured in my MS Laser 6000 mouse, and it still won't scroll.

And now, after monkeying around a bit, I have also discovered that it does not scroll correctly in the Control Panel (all items view) either.

We are not the first to report this for various apps, as seen here:

Might just be time to pony up for a Logitech mouse, but I'll report it anyway.

It must have been a well know issue for Microsoft as it had a specially designed patch for the problem. Trouble is the patch never did work correctly.

Another interesting thing was that my wife's laptop has 4 usb ports, two on the left and two on the right. The original Microsoft mouse would only work (albeit erratically) if the usb wireless dongle was plugged into the same side as where the mouse was to be used.

With the Logitec mouse it can be plugged in either side and works great.
