Importing from Sage Act Confusion - Contacts filtered down from 3000

Address book shows around 600 cards instead of the 3000 or so I started out with found in ACT. I'm a new Mac user. What have I done and is there a cleaner way of importing and maintaining not only the number of contacts but the matching of fields?
