Multiple app freezing

Hi. My iMac 20" (2Ghz Intel Core2Duo) Mac OS 10.5.5 with 3GO SDRAM (+ 3 external drive) began to act suddenly weirdly. Some app (not the same each time) begin to freeze (can't force quit it) then another. At some point i have to force reboot. Again and again. Now its become serious i just loose some Indesign file (i guess it was writting on the file when it froze…).

I don't know how to use the Console in an efficient way, too much message. I note this anyway :
_06/10/08 21:18:14 kextd[10] WARNING: /System/Library/Extensions: No such file or directory_
or that :
_06/10/08 19:14:51 mdworker[73] (Error) SyncInfo: Boot-cache avoidance timed out!_
But really there is too much messages for me to find whats important (if you can tell me how to use the console…).

I made the fast Apple Hardware Test aand it was ok. Run System utility, HD are ok, ran Onyx, erazed font caches and checked all fonts… I runned the 10.5.5 combo, made the firmware update… nothing.

It's very difficult to find whats goin wrong because the freeze happens randomly : sometimes when you tryin to switch user, sometime when launching an app (any app) sometime when saving, sometime just clicking an icon, sometime pluging a card reader… it make no sense.

Any help apreciated…

grrr…

So i decided i had to re-install from scratch with the original DVD, then the combo update to 10.5.5 and all the other updates. Then putting back Mail, iCal, AdressBook, iTunes… using my 'old' Application support files… all working well. Then re-installing my software (CS3, FontExplorer, 1Password, CyberDuck, Transmission, NetNewsWire, Adium, Google Notifier, The Unarchiver, UnrarX, VLC, OpenOffice… i think thats it). Oh and my ICC profiles from ECI.

I thought all was well but the crash are BACK ! BACK ! BACK !

i have some of that messages again :

Hi All,

I am experiencing a similar situation. When I do a tail of the system.log remotely via SSH (I am unable to access the system directly as it has completely locked up the GUI) I see several of the following.

Dec 1 19:50:58 mac-mini kernel[0]: IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType0E::setPowerState(0x51b6000, 4 -> 3) timed out after 100141 ms
Dec 1 19:55:58 mac-mini kernel[0]: IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType0E::setPowerState(0x51b6000, 3 -> 2) timed out after 100136 ms
Dec 1 20:00:58 mac-mini kernel[0]: IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType0E::setPowerState(0x51b6000, 2 -> 1) timed out after 100164 ms

It seems that one of my disks has packed it in, I don't have any SCSI either, but I suspect that firewire is represented as SCSI by the OS. I have two Firewire disks and one internal SATA disk. The Hex number after setPowerState seems to change between boots and reconnecting the disks. Unfortunately I only have one firewire connector, so I have to connect the disks in serial.

Does anyone have a way of telling from the information which disk is failing, and why? If I remove the disks the system returns to functionality.
