Trying to install HP 672C Deskjet Printer

Hi -
I'm looking to set up my MacBook to print to my HP 672C. I haven't installed a printer to this MacBook yet.

I got a driver from the HP web site for OS 9 - the latest MacOS driver available (I have OS X 10.5.5). The downloaded file is "HP Deskjet Installer." When I go to the Print & Fax I click on the '+' to add the printer but nothing pops up to ask about looking for a driver.

There isn't anything in MacOS that will open & run the installer ... I think.

Any suggestions?

If you have OS 10.5.5 I suggest you DO NOT install the driver for OS 9. It should be obvious, but the driver you have does not support OS 10. The instructions on the HP website says Mac OS 9 and Mac OS 8 compatibility. It does not say this driver is compatible with OS 10.5.

In another part of the web site HP lists all the printers supported under 10.5; it does indicate that the "HP Deskjet 672c Printer - Gutenprint" is supported, however, it doesn't provide any driver. Go figure.

I suggest you buy a new HP printer.

The Gutenprint driver for this printer is included with Leopard. Were the HP drivers installed when the system was installed? If the printer is connected by USB, it should be automatically added if the driver is there. If the driver is not installed, you can use the install dvd to do a custom install of the HP printing package.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, everyone.

DVD's for installing drivers weren't around 16 years ago when I bought the printer. Also, I don't have USB connectors on my printer. I'll probably have to buy a new printer since it'll cost a few bucks to get a parallel-port print server for my old printer.

You can always try when it comes to drivers - as far as I found.

Not quite. (You're showing your age to even know the terminology.)

It starts clicking after a while while traversing left & right. I clean up the carriage & wipe the carriage rod with some WD-40 ... a no-no according to HP but it works.

Also, it's hooked up to a 1995 Dell desktop ... 500 MHz baby! It's really slowing down so I got the MacBook. Fortunately I don't have much printing to do lately but when I do that's the one.
