Can't see my ipod playlists in iTunes

I created a folder in itunes in order to organize my playlists. As soon as I did that the playlists on my ipod nano disappeared from itunes. I deleted the folder I created (in itunes, that is), together with its playlists and the problem still persists. I just added a new playlist to the ipod and i can't see that either in itunes. When the ipod is disconnected from ipod, I can see the playlists on the ipod but i can't see them in itunes, period. When I add songs to the ipod they just go to the songlist, not to any specific playlist because I can't see any anyways. Help.

The problem is not about updating. When you connect your ipod to itunes, you are supposed to see the playlists that are on your ipod on the computer. In my case, I do not see the playlists that should be on the ipod. When you add a playlist to the ipod you are supposed to see those playlists in itunes. While I do see them on the ipod when I disconnect it from itunes, I do not see them when the ipod is connected to itunes. It is making the process of organizing my music impossible. So the problem is not with automatic or manual updating. The problem is with seeing the playlists in itunes.

I'm beginning to wonder if it is that I am not making myself clear. The problem that I am having is that when I connect my ipod to my computer, THE PLAYLISTS ON THE IPOD ARE NOT DISPLAYED IN ITUNES. I ONLY HAVE THE IPOD ICON APPEARING. WHATEVER PLAYLISTS THIS IPOD MAY HAVE ARE NOT DISPLAYED ON THE COMPUTER. That is my problem. How do I get the playlists ON MY IPOD to REAPPEAR IN ITUNES WHEN I CONNECT IT TO ITUNES? None of the suggestions that I have been given to date answer my question nor solves my problem.
