how to intercept touch events for Interface Builder's UIView

If I have a UIView that I laid out on a window using the interface builder, how to intercept its touch events? I can't subclass it because it's laid out with IB, so think of it as an existing UIView that I want to "observe".

Create a ViewController for it. Wire the File's Owner Class to the ViewController. Setup IBAction methods and IBOutlets for your view elements. Wire them up to use your IBAction methods, and the referencing outlet to your File's Owner.

or

- (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event

might be all you need in your ViewController.

I already have a controller. I tried adding in - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event{
NSLog(@"touched");

As expected, it doesn't work.

I'll try the wiring approach, not quite sure how to wire it in but I can hack at it a bit and see if I can figure it out.

There is a drop down list in the Identity Inspector in IB that will let you select the class of your File's Owner. Also make sure the UIView in your NIB is wired to the view property of your File's Owner. By wire I just mean drag from the circle in IB to the desired item.

well, the deal is my project is a bit more complex than I explained...

What I'm trying to do is put a transparent view over a UIWebView so I can capture touch events and do a popup toolbar when a user does a single tap. The UIWebView hides all the events. So here is what my interface builder looks like:

My UIWebView is attached to the view property of the controller currently. I've tried wiring in the view property to the transparent view as well, but it didn't work for me (the tap event still didn't trigger in the controller).

any other thoughts on this?
