Here is a list of the keyboard shortcuts you can use for that:

The fix for no character palette is here:

Using the character palette is the slow way to do it. If you are going to do a lot of Spanish you might want to memorize the main keyboard strokes to do the accents as both previous posters mentioned.

The option key creates your accent and then you just press the vowel you wish accented:

Option + e = the ´ mark. Hit the vowel you wish to accent immediately afterward and you get:

    é, á, ó

For example: the entire combo for an accent e is:

    Option + e, then type e (result=é)

    For an accented a type option + e, then type a (result=á)

For a tilde you press option +n and then press an again. (result:=ñ)

If you type primarily in Spanish you may also want to activate the Spanish keyboard. With the Spanish keyboard activated pressing the ";" key immediately gives you: ñ. To get accent keys you hit the [ key and the vowel. This saves you a stroke.

To activate the Spanish keyboard go to the Apple menu and select "System Preferences" and then click on the "International" icon and the select the "input menu" tab. Then check the keyboards you wish to have available from the list. Make sure you also check the "show input menu in menu bar. This lets you switch keyboards quickly and also gives you quick access to the character palette.

With respect to Keith's post above, how do you input a semi-colon while using the Spanish keyboard?

Though I love my Mac for many things, I really, really, REALLY miss the US-International keyboard layout that I use on Windows. It allows you to type in both languages (for me, Spanish and English) without changing keyboard setups, but detects the variances between the two. For example, typing ' plus a vowel gets you an accented vowel, but ' followed by anything else gets you an apostrophe.

If anyone knows of a solution to this issue, I would love to hear it!

The key next to the return for Spanish. Shift plus , for Spanish ISO
