Downloaded Mac OS X 10.4.11 - Now what?

I finally was able to download the upgrade for my Mac in order for my iLife to work. I was able to get my ISP to give me unlimited time before disconnecting me from the internet, so my dial-up had time. Now I have it on my desktop and opened it to install it. I got as far as Select a Destination. It gives me only the choice of the Macintosh HD 148GB (134GB Free). The update requires 205MB of space. What can I safely discard to make enough room for this update?
I do not use Garage Band, I don't have an ipod, I don't use Quicken, Appleworks or Instant Messaging. Basically, I want to control my web site, and I use my computer to contact and be contacted by prospective buyers. The bells and whistles don't mean much to me, but since everything seems to be related I am not sure what I may discard.

Okay, I did get my GB and MB's mixed up.
Here is what the installer window says, "You cannot install Mac OS X Update (PowerPC) on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update".
It only gives me one choice for a destination, the Hard Drive, and then says I can't use it. Is there something I can try to give me another choice? Would it make any difference if I restart my computer and then attempt to install it?

What update did you download and are now attempting to instal there, Sheila?

You can only instal an OSX update on a HD that already has OSX installed on it; hence the only option available is to instal on your system HD. OSX is most likely not allowing you to instal the update because you are attempting to instal an update that is not supported by the current OS; like the error message has stated.

For instance if you attempt to instal the most recent OS update which is 10.5.5 on a system that only has 10.4.x installed on it, then you will receive an error message. I believe this may be the case in this instance. The last update available for OSX 10.4.x is 10.4.11

Correct me if I'm wrong with specifics of your system setting in regard to currently installed OS, RAM, CPU processor, gfx card, system HD connection method, and the specific OSX update you downloaded and are now attempting to instal and I will reciprocate the effort with an attempt to assist you in a courteous, helpful, and timely manner.

I was under the impression that when I purchased this computer it was already OX 10.4.10, but I must have been mistaken and it is OS 10.4.

How do I bring things up to date to be able to install the OS 10.4.11 and then my new iLife program?
Bear in mind that I don't care about Garage Band, iPod, iPhone, etc. Just need to use computer for basic things and wish to work on a web site. I do burn DVD's and do short videos to send to people, but I do them on my Cannon digital camera and then load them into the computer.

If I need to download more updates, I need to do it before my ISP limits my connections to the internet again. I have full access through Friday now.

You should get more points when there are more question than one in a topic.

Are you sure it's 10.4 you have? Some Powermac G5's came with 10.3 in which case you can not update to 10.4.x without first installing 10.4. There is also a version of 10.4.11 that can only be updated from 10.4.10 the other, larger update can be installed from 10.4.x

On the top left click on the Apple then click on "About This Mac"
The window that appears will show the OS version number which should read 10.4.x if you want to instal 10.4.11

If it does say 10.4.x then let us know of your other computer specifications that were requested in my previous post.

I was hoping I could log on this morning and say everything is okay. Well, it's not.

I started the download about 9 p.m. and it first showed me that it would take 2 Plus days to download. I went away and waited for it to figure out the actual time. I came back and checked it at 9:45 and it said 1 day, 6 hrs., 12 minutes. At 11:51 it said 19 hours, 29 minutes. At 12:10 a.m. it said 18 hours 38 minutes, 12:29 a.m. - 17 hours, 53 minutes, 2:38 a.m. - 14 hours, 26 minutes, 7:52 a.m. - 10 hours 57 minutes. Then at 10 a.m. I came in to check and it had downloaded 105MB and quit for no apparent reason. The connection had not been cut off.

I am at a loss now to why it stopped downloading and of course, why it takes so long on my computer?

I will not try to download it again until late this afternoon or tonight. Also, I restarted my computer before I started the download so no other applications would be running and I opened immediately to the download page and started there.

I should mention in my last post that the download time is optimum for 56K dialup modem.
However, when your phone line quality is degraded the modem will initiate at a lower data rate than 56Kb/s.
When you dial up your ISP, you can find your dial up speed using *Internet Connect* (in Applications folder).
You can find out rough estimate of download time using the following:

((180800000 * 8) / modem-speed) / 3600

You can copy any paste the above equation in Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%28%28180800000*+8%29+%2F+56000%29+%2F+3600&btnG=GoogleSearch

modem-speed = the speed you get in Internet Connect, ie: 40000 bit/sec
MB = Mega Byte = Million or the six-digits after 180 (180.80MB = 180800000)
Kb/s = Kilo bit per second = thousand or three-digits (56Kb/s = 56000 bit/sec)
Byte = 8 bits per Byte (that's what the * 8 is all about)
the last 3600 = 1 hour

Yeah I missed a zero in my equation. It should be approx. 530 mins. I knew it right after I wrote it

If you're having trouble with your dial up just bring a blank CD to the Apple store and download the update from there then burn to your CD. Apple should help you with this make an appointment with a genius bar rep at your local Apple store to have them help you out. Make a revervation at a local Apple Retail genius bar by going to this link tell them you have a blank CD and want to download the 10.4.11 combo update and burn the update to your CD so you can take the CD home and instal the update.

Trouble is an understatment. I started the downloadat 5:29 p.m. on Thursday and it started with 3.1KB per sec and gave me a time of 17 hours - 7 minutes.
I was able to download 119 MB by 8:27 a.m. and then got a message that mounting failed. Seems odd that the last time I tried to download, it quit at 8:28 the next morning. Something must happen at around 8:30 with my ISP.

I will take my computer and a CD in the the Apple Store as soon as I can find someone to take me. I live about 50 miles west of St. Louis and there are two Apple stores in St. Louis, both within 5 miles of each other. Sure would be nice if they would move one west a few miles where the population is growing the most.

Thanks everyone for all of your help. Wish you could all get points from this.

Sheila
