Help installing iTunes 8.1

I cannot install the latest iTunes 8.1 as I get a message "problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run". Can somebody please help me.

I too have this problem. Having searched around the web, I came across this article. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5077321

I hope its of use to you, but as I am using vista, the guide doesnt show me where to find the log file in question. Please someone help.

Something to try ...


Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program.

To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install Cleanup

Try uninstalling any instance of Apple software update.

If you get an uninstall failure, run the cleanup utility and remove any instance of Apple software update that you find.


Download the iTunes installer and save it on your desktop.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Rune the installer from there.
