My computer thinks my iPod is a camera; iTunes won't launch automatically

Bizarre. When I connect my iPod an alert comes up with something like "new camera device connected" or opens a dialog box asking which photo software I want to use.

This is probably why iTunes does not start when I connect my iPod.

OS is Windows XP SP3.

MacBook Pro; iPod Touch, iPod Nano, Windows XP Pro

The same thing happened to me after 2.0
It's because you have saved images on it you saved directly from your iPod by using either Safari or Email. Not sure why it does it though, just wanted to let you know you're not alone. Although mine doesn't do it anymore after I deleted the images, and saved them again.
