This accessory is not made to work with IPhone

At random, receive "This accessory is not made to work with Iphone. Would you like to turn on Airplane..." when waking up my iphone using the "Home" key. After pressing the Home key, Iphone will wake up, display the message, then crash. It will not crash in the sense that is needs to be restarted however. Pushing the "home" key again will wake the Iphone and it will operate normally.

It is a pretty frustrating issue. I have restored the software and firmware and have clean the dock.
With the exception of erosion in the docking port or a bend or broken connection, I can not think of what may be causing this little glitch.

Any suggestions?

Vincent,

I did have that problem! However, I was able to restore it and those issues went away. I thought my battery was shot. Don't quote me but I think I reset the phone itself from the IPhone General settings. YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA and if it still won't sync, you will really have issues. Sounds like a trip to the Apple Store is in order. That where it looks like I am going.

Thanks for replying.

Hey Mike!

So you went to Settings > General > Reset... Which one did you choose?
I don't really mind if my iPhone keeps on showing this really annoying message, the essential is for me to be able to sync it and charge it with my computer...

I went to an Apple store where I live (in Macau, China), and they were not sure about my issue, they said it may be a bad pin problem... But nothing was confirmed... Tell me what the Apple Store near you says about it, OK?

Thanks for the speedy answer.

Hey Vince,

No word yet. What I have done was (believe it or not) capture the issue on video. I now need to go to the Apple Store and show them. I am sure I will get the old "Reset phone/Restore software" etc. I have already accomplished this.
I am a Computer Science Major so you would think I would have some credibility. We will see.

I will post as soon as I get some info.

You said you restored it, and the issue went away. Or did it not go away?

It just started doing the same thing to me out of the blue two days ago. It's very frustrating! Especially when it overrides the headphones! It also mutes games, etc.

I have cleaned every pin individually on mine..... STILL ACTING UP! Same original docking cable, everything is original and CLEAN!

Hi! You can try cleaning out the little pins in the bottom of the iPhone. But there is a chance that you might damage it but thats unlikely. I believe that this happens due to erosion from moisture. Has your iPhone been exposed to moisture? Not dropped in water but has it ever gotten slightly wet in the bottom area? If so cleaning out the rust or whatever might fix this. I've always gotten this but it just takes time to clean it out then its like new again.

These iPhones are very badly made, but who cares cuz they're awesome!!!

I have the exact same problem as mikevio and others describe. It started after dropping the iphone on the garage floor after shoveling snow. Water got on the iPhone and I dried it immediately. I suspect there is still some water inside.

BTW, how to dry an iPhone? I have a friend who has fixed his iPhone at least 3 times by putting it under vacuum in his lab. Once, suspecting that some salt may have gotten in to it, he put the iPhone in distilled water then dried it with a high vacuum.

I will try the vacuum trick and see if it helps my unit.

Same as me. I definetly noticed this issue immedietly after 2.2 whatever the problem is this phone thinks its being docked into a 3rd party device. I have an alpine 1va d300 and an ihome device which are both ipod compatible. I know for a fact i have not dropped or had water damage. I just downloaded 2.2 on Monday and the problems started on the same day. Most of you guys (with exception to whom had h2o damage) say you noticed the problem with 2.2 and you all being posting since January. Coincidence? Sounds like Apple is to blame.

I have the same problem as well.

I've been getting the "accessory not made" warning for over 2 weeks now, and it suddenly appeared with no change in my iPhone usage or care (which are both good -- I still have an original iPhone!).

It happens every time I unlock the iPhone, and sometimes when it's just sitting on a table. I get absolutely no sound out of the speakers -- system sounds, sounds that come with apps, the iPod function -- as if I put it into silent mode. Oddly, the only sound that isn't affected is the ringtone. I'll hear the phone ring, but can't even get the click when I un/lock the iPhone. (I do get crystal clear sound with headphones, though.)

I've toggled the mute on/off button. I've heeded the iPhone's recommendation to put it into Airplane mode, and I've bypassed it. I've backed up and restored the iPhone. I've stopped using the stand-up dock, and am just going straight USB.

Nothing seems to work.

In reply to how to dry an iPhone there is two versions that work. Either get hold of some Silica sachet contents (what they put into shoe boxes) or some rice will do the same but take longer.
Grab a clear sandwich bag or cling wrap and add the Silica or Rice and your iPhone. tie closed and leave in a dark and cool place (cloths draw) and leave for a few days (5-10 better). The Silica or Rice will draw out he moisture and the phone will work fine.
I use this often after dropping many phones in mud and water.
