If the computer and iTunes will recognize it, try restoring the firmware.XP Toshiba, Vista HP, Windows XP Pro, 80GB Classic. New owner of purple 4G 8GB Nano! :)

Slide the hold switch from OFF to ON back to OFF then immediately hold down BOTH the center and Menu buttons for a good 15-30 seconds or until it restarts with the Apple logo.
Resetting isn't always effective once and you may need to retry it several times to get it to work.
