iPod cuts off ends of songs?

The most recent couple of albums I've uploaded to my iPod have given me a strange problem. The songs will cut off anywhere between 3 and 10 seconds early and go right to the next one.

Here's what I've checked:

1) Listening to the songs on the computer, in the library, does not present the same problem
2) Listening to the songs on the computer, in the connected iPod, does not present the same problem
3) Songs do not have a "Stop Time" set in the options

Problem seems to be intermittent as well. I've only heard it with a couple of albums I've uploaded recently, and I've only noticed it when listening to the entire album on its own (not shuffle). Also, a different album I've uploaded recently has not given me problems at all.

The files are all .mp3.

I had (or have as it hasn't been solved) the same problem as you described in your post with the 160GB Classic.

I took it to the Genius bar and told them all about it. I thought it may have been a hardware problem (the songs worked fine on a 5G iPod) and they thought it had something to with the way the music was ripped. I was told to re-rip the albums in question and come back if it was still the same. Of course, I re-ripped one album to test it out (I’m not re-ripping all of the affected albums!) and the problem was still the same.

I took it back and told them I still had the same problem. They replaced the unit F.O.C. as it was brand new but it still did the same thing when I put music on it.

Restoring the thing doesn’t work and re-ripping/re-copying the songs doesn’t work either.

I thought it may have been an issue with Windows XP but yours is Mac formatted.

Anyone know of a fix?

Just agreeing to this problem!!!

I have restored the iPod.

When I copied all the songs over at once to the clean iPod, they seem to play correctly through to the end of each song. If I add any from that point forward, they tend to skip the last 5 to 25 seconds and jump right into the next. As noted, if I play the songs from the iPod using iTunes 8.0.2 while connected, the songs play fine. The songs clip only when playing songs using the headphone/out connector on the iPod.

So, is it a problem with iTunes 8 or the iPod? This is very frustrating.

All songs were ripped AAC, 192 VBR.

I don't know if it's iTunes 8 or not, but the ones I am having problem with have all been added since iTUnes 8. I went through the other night and added all of my Christmas albums. I was very methodical in checking this - all of mine skip to the next song with 45secs left in the current song. EVEN if I am fast forwarding manually!!!

From what I can tell - EACH of my Christmas albums (added the same night) are doing this.

Just an update...I was thinking it had to do with when the songs were copied to the iPod. Actually, I did another restore and copied all the music over at one time. All the CDs ripped recently (with iTunes 8.0.2) still clipped the last 15 to 40 seconds of each song during iPod playback. Older rips played correctly. Something just isn't right between iTunes and the Fifth Gen iPod! Very frustrating.

I got the 8.0.2 update and installed it. After that, I took the songs that were causing me trouble (Genre, Christmas) and made a playlist. I then hooked up my iPod and told it to sync that playlist. I've played quite a few songs from that list today (didn't re-import them or do anything else physical), and they've all played completely through.

As others have said, and I find it very interesting, though the problem with clipping still exists on my 5th gen iPod (1.3) and iTunes (8.0.2), I tried another restore and this time I copied the music over using a playlist and the clipping appears to be gone. (Playlist versus dragging multiple tracks/CDs)

It's a workaround in my opinion, but at least now I can play music during the holidays without that irritating behavior. I only tested a dozen tracks, so I hope it continues to work this way.

mine does this every now and then, really annoying. I restore the ipod about once every two months and this keeps it in check. When it starts to happen, give it a restore and you'll be right for a little while at least...

My headphone jack appears to have given out now though, as seems to be fairly common with these things. Thinking of finally giving up on the 5th gen ipod. two years is a pretty good life for an ipod right?

My first generation iPod nano and iPod mini both just started doing this the moment I upgraded to iTunes 8.02. I tried restoring my iPod and that did not work. I've started using winAmp to transfer songs to my iPod, and they now play perfectly without cutting off. I'm kind of sad because I like iTunes' interface better, but I'm not going to use it if it doesn't work properly.

I don't know if this helps anyone but I had the same problem (songs getting cut off the last 2-6 seconds) I highlighted all the songs in Itunes, right clicked, went to "get info", click the options tab on the top right, on the bottom check to enable the box next to gapless album and change the setting to "no"
of course sync Ipod, worked for me.

this problem was annoying me greatly because half my albums the songs all flow into one another like dark side of the moon by pink floyd.

hope this helps

Well, glad to know I'm not the only one, but this is becoming extremely frustrating. I'm not about to restore as I have 15K plus songs so this is a huge annoyance.
Apple needs to get it together and come up with a solution to this. The only thing I've noticed that might work and is still a pain is to go back and play the songs through itunes. This might work, I am still testing, but why should I have to do this?
Maybe its just time to get a Zune already...

I have this problem too and as suggested in the post from JayTay I tried removing the album artwork from one of the affected albums. It worked and the album played through without any problems, but the weird thing is that all of the affected albums were then able to play through properly, even though I had only removed the artwork from the one.
Come on Apple, this is ridiculous, sort it out!
