Unfortunately, the "Disk Scan" is not the same as the "Diagnostics."

I'm guessing that the buttons got smashed when the Nano was stuffed in a bag without the Hold switch engaged, and so the iPod freaked out & crashed.
The symptoms:
- completely unresponsive to all buttons (Menu+Play reset trick doesn't work)
- connecting iPod USB to a PowerBook yields nothing; the iPod USB device doesn't even show up in the Apple System Profiler
- the iPod screen faintly shows a diagnostic menu
I'm thinking it needs to be returned to Apple for repair/replacement.
