60w magsafe power adapter

Hi, Can I use my UK 60w magsafe power adapter in the US or will I have to buy a US spec. power supply?

Hey guys!

Perhaps I can be of help!

The MagSafe adapter in the US is identical to the one in the UK. The great thing about most modern power adapters, of which Apple's are, is that they are auto-sensing. This means they can adjust to differing standards of power delivery, such as the 50 Hz standard used in Europe and the 60 Hz standard used elsewhere, as well as differing voltages.

That means you won't have to shell out about £59 for a new one!

You will need an adapter: the removable plug part, or "duck head", considering its appearance when removed, as its known within Apple. You can get an international kit of these for £29 in the UK, though you could probably pick one up in the US for less when you get there. This kit will work with any recent Apple power adapter that uses the "duck head" style. Alternately, if you're only paying a fly in visit, you can use a travel adapter or Telefunken cable (the flat connector used by most DVD players etc.).

Have a great trip to the US!

Regards,

Liam E.

Two differing opinions.....Anyone else with a definative answer.

It's a universal switching power supply: 100-240V AC and 50-60Hz.. As was correctly stated a few times, the power adapter body sold around the world is exactly the same. While the Apple modular plug would be the simplest solution, you should also be able to use a simple and inexpensive passive adapter such as the following:

I think the biggest problem with trying to get the US two-prong plug alone is that I haven't actually seen it sold that way new in the US. It's not in the US Apple Store catalog. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe US Apple Stores had it as a non-catalog item you need to ask for. The world travel adapter kit sold all over the world seems to have it as part of a set of six plugs. I've got several of these US two-prong modular plugs from various Apple adapters my iBooks, iPods, and MacBook, but I haven't seen them sold new. I have heard of used ones being sold:

Here's the World Travel Adapter Kit sold at the UK Apple Store.

Cheers Liam, thanks for the thorough explanation. I went into the Apple shop this afternoon in the Trafford Centre and a saleswoman told me 'Oh no, you'll have to buy one over there'. It's just for 2 weeks so I'll use a travel adaptor.

You should be able to get the World Travel plug kit.

Still - a passive travel adapter (UK-in - US-out) should work OK, but with a few caveats. I've generally found than the more things that hang from a plug, the more likely they sag as a unit. Just keep an eye on the outlet to make sure it stays in there.

Hi,

The two recessed pins on the Magsafe power pack are a standard format, sometimes called a shaver cord receptacle, because that format is popular on electric razors such as Braun and Norelco. You can find a, "universal replacement," laptop cord for about $6 (or less) at electronics stores. I tried the power cord from my Toshiba and it is a perfect fit for the Apple power supply. When you reach the US, take your Magsafe to a Radio Shack (that's the name of the chain) store; they should have what you need. You may need to remind them it really does work with a universal replacement cord.

Yes, as other writers have noted, the 60 watt Magsafe power pack is rated 100-240 V RMS 50/60 Hz input.

I looked at the RadioShack website and searched. The closest thing I could find was an extension and a plug. It may work, but it looks a bit awkward. They do note that most stores have these parts, but I guess one would have to just find out.

I'd also note that the "Norelco" name wouldn't be familiar to anyone out of North America. That would be Philips on the other side of the Atlantic. I have some older shavers that connected directly to A/C via the plug you described with the transformer inside the shaver. The more recent versions use a "wall wart" adapter that outputs low-voltage DC to the shaver.

My recommendation to the original poster would still be to get a passive adapter in the UK. It should be cheap and will save the time of trying to track down a part in a place which might be unfamiliar.

On a slightly different but connected note, will my 90w uk power supply (mbp) work ok with my sons macbook.

I assume the 60w won't work on my mbp but will the 90 w adjust for the macbook or will it be too much and burn?

You should have no problem using the MPB power adapter. Some people claim the MBP power supply runs cooler because it isn't maxed out.

Hi,

Thanks for the well considered and detailed follow-up. It can be difficult to find the two-prong UK to two-blade adapters here in the US, so I'd recommend purchasing an adapter in the UK before traveling.

Here is an alternative example of a universal cord that should be compatible with the Magsafe:

One could also purchase a Magsafe charger with the USA/Japan power cord option.

RadioShack supposedly has that in stores, but of course that could depend on the store and the OP's ability to find a store.

This one is in a grounded version. Some older American homes (such as mine) don't have three-prong grounded outlets.
