Web Safe Fonts

Hi All,

In one of the other posts, I seem to remember that Old Toad suggested using web safe fonts for both Mac and Windows platforms. Yet in in the collections column of my fonts window, I only see Web, and nothing about Windows or Mac.

I had posted this same question in the thread New Nav bar Problem, but Tom Gewecke suggested I start a new thread.

Can someone elucidate please?

Mac Powerbook G4 17", Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Web safe fonts are "Web Safe" because they appear the same on both Mac and Windows. There aren't separate fonts for windows and Mac. Web safe fonts include;

Arial
Helvetica
Verdana
Trebuchet MS
Times New Roman
Courier

Try expanding your fonts window horizontally and you will see, at the bottom of the left column, "Web-safe Mac/Windows".

Hi Roddy,

I did what you suggested and expanded my fonts window horizontally and vertically as far as it will go, but I still see only Web and no Web-safe Mac/Windows in the Collections Column. Could it be that I may not have the latest updater of iWeb? I am using iWeb '08 version 2.0.4 and Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.11

Hi ragesw,

In my fonts window, the list of web safe fonts that appears is:

Andale Mono
Arial
Arial Black
Brush Script MT
Comic Sans MS
Georgia
Impact
Times New Roman
Trebuchet MS
Verdana
Webdings

This business of web safe fonts is getting more confusing for me. I don't seem to see the same things you guys are reporting.

You're using the same software versions that I am.
Does the font window appear the same in all applications or just iWeb?
Try Command T in mail and see if the web safe fonts are listed there.

Yes, those are the fonts you should stick too. My list didn't include ALL web safe fonts, just the most popular.

So if you stick to those fonts, your website will always look the same and your text will not be converted into pictures.

Hi Roddy,

I followed your suggestion and did a Cmd-T in Mail. Mail shows the same font window as iWeb. Only a Web collection, with exactly the same fonts I listed in my post above. Nothing about Windows - Mac.

Try restarting your Mac and running Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Look in Home Folder/Library/Font Collections to see if you have a file called Web-safe Mac/Windows.collection.

Hi Roddy,

I repaired disk permissions to no avail. Now that I looked in my Home Folder/Library/Font Collections, I see that the file Web-safe Mac/Windows.collection is not there. Where and how do I get it?
