Infamous error 118 is back

This morning a user got her laptop back from repair. Since last week she was using a borrow PMG4 (portable OD account) waiting for a new hardrive.

Alas, she cannot log in anymore. Password is OK but her laptop doesn't achieve to mount her homedir (AFP on 10.5.5 Server Xserve). Worst : she cannot log in from any computer of our system !
Even the PMG4 she was using a few minutes before !

The pop-up message is (translated from french, sorry) "Session opening failed because of an error".
No error message on server side. Client side, we found this (we hadn't see it for month) :

+Oct 10 16:19:07 hostname authorizationhost[81495]: ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dirPath:username:] | PremountHomeDirectoryWithAuthentication( url=afp://serverfqdn/test, homedir=/Network/Servers/serverfqdn/Volumes/Mountpoint/test/toto, name=toto ) returned 118+

Nothing has changed on ther server ! The path in WGM is correct.

And the worst is that *we cannot add any new user*... existing users can still connect (except the one above), new user get systematically the "error 118", whatever the machine or the Mac OS X version (Tiger or Leopard). I've been adding users until yesterday without problem.

I've checked all the points in LDAP attributes, all seems to be correct. It's a nightmare. The same that has lasted for months and disappeared one day. It's back... 118

Please help if you can, before users get upset and kill me.

profile erased once more...

Well I managed to enable afp debugging on client side (btw the commands in Apple "Server Administration" p186 don't work ).

This is what I get in debug.log (if someone can find the problem in this, I will appreciate it )

the following is repeated 6 times and then ends with error 118

After 4 days investigating the problem above, I have temporarily fixed it (but not solved) by using NFS automounted HomeDir instead of AFP.

I don't like it, but users don't see the difference...

Speaking of investigating, the debug log shows a problem :

+SrvrSigMatch: vfs <afp_3xMLte0003KD0000oM0000VU-1.2e00002a> does not match the server signature+

I'm unable to understand what it means...

But the following lines are not as they should :

+Oct 13 14:36:46 clientname /usr/libexec/mount_url\[98936\]: TUAMHandler::Initalize flags are 1 username is 0:+
+Oct 13 14:36:46 clientname /usr/libexec/mount_url\[98936\]: TUAMHandler Username is 0:+

when it should be something like :

+Oct 14 09:38:54 clientname authorizationhost\[98936\]: TUAMHandler::Initalize flags are 1 username is 7:nicolas+
+Oct 14 09:38:54 clientname authorizationhost\[98936\]: TUAMHandler Username is 7:nicolas+

Does anyone know what this SrvrSigMatch is ? That would be helpfull to understand the problem...

I discovered that my "118" error was caused by a simple mistake I made.
In Work Group Manager, I set the home directory share point URL to
"afp://server.domain/home/student" and the path to home folder to "test1".
This is incorrect because my share point is "afp://server.domain/home".
using the correct share point and a home folder path of "students/test1"
made the "118" go away. Note that the "Full Path" is the same in both cases.

I made the mistake, but Apple is responsible for making bad design decisions
and missing documentation.
Why does WGM let me enter an invalid share point?
Why is the logon screen error message "content free"?
Why is the client log message"returning 118" instead of an explanation?
Why is "118" undocumented?
If it is documented, why can no one find the document?
...

Infamous error 118 is back
