AppStore - Does "In Review" mean they have started work on it?

When an status of an App shows as *In Review* does it mean they have started work on it?

Or that is the only status that shows until they either have queries or when they make it available on the AppStore?

When we submitted there was not even an email from them. Do they send one? It would be nice if there was a way for them to keep the developers in the loop.

That means you're in line for acceptance. They will make sure it runs and follows community standards, make sure it doesn't copy functionality of other Apple apps, and then make sure there is a purpose. When you're out of in review is when your app is posted to the app store.

You don't get emails when your status is changed to In Review, only when the status changes to "Ready for Sale", or if there is a problem with your binary.
