No Sound from internal speaker in iPod touch

My sister has an ipod touch of the exact same model and she has a working internal speaker. Is there a way to turn it on or off in itunes or the ipod or is mine defective?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Built-in speaker (on the IPT 2G) works only if the phone jack is unplugged. Are your earphones plugged in?

Headphones are not plugged in when I try, I assume I have the 1st Gen model then which is a total bummer. Im running the 2.1 software and I get normal alert sounds such as mail recieved and sent or the unlock and lock sound... Im just dissapointed that I dont have an internal speaker for watching things like say youtube videos. We can only assume I have the older model then.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

The Second Generation +iPod touch+ is most easy recognized by the volume buttons on the side. The First Gen model only has "Sleep/Wake" and "Home" buttons.
