Question

An error occurred while adding "" to the archive

I'm trying to compress a folder using the Finder contextual menu, but when I do so, an error dialog box pops up, saying 'an error occurred while adding " " to the archive'. What should I do? The folder contains a number of Keynote presentations, 2 Word documents and a Keynote theme.

I'm using Leopard 10.5.5

Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Nigel,

I have had this error too, even in 10.4 or earlier. I got it again today and after poking around, it appears to have been a file permission issue. At least in this instance some symbolic links were missing write permission to the "group" and "other". Luckily it was safe for me to delete them. That got compression working again.

Another solution is to copy the problematic folder/file. Seems that copying fixes permissions. Compression should then work on the copy.
