Is there a way to have the Register tab be locked in the QuickTime preferences so the code is not accidentally deleted?

No, but you can back up the file /Library/Preferences/, which contains the key. If it was entered from a non-administrator account, start the path from the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon instead of from the top level of the hard disk.

Or you can put the code on a Text Edit page and save that file. That's what I do with registration codes.
