Can't send email from iPod Touch

When I compose a new email on the Touch it gives me a message which reads "Cannot Send Mail – the sender address was invalid" All my accounts were synced when I set up the iPod Touch. Can someone help?

In Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, there is a list of each mail account. You would need to check each one individually (if you have more than one). Specifics would be to check that names and passwords are OK -- particularly upper and lower case, and/or symbols. I would also make sure the settings for SMTP are correct. Even if they are, take them out and retype.

With SMTP as well as the primary server, you can have a list of other SMTP addresses so the device can try others if the first fails: useful if you travel around. A variety may be useful.

I finally am able to send email from one of the three accounts on my iPod Touch 2G without getting the "sender address was invalid" message, by deleting the account and re-entering the basic settings directly on the iPod. I still have the problem on the other accounts. The question remains: why does this problem occur when all the email account settings on the iPod (including SMTP settings) are identical to those on a computer which has no problem sending email when connected by Wi-Fi? (I don't really expect an answer, as I suspect it's some problem in the iPod software or hardware.)

I had the same problem, able to receive email but not send. I did the auto setup. Today I took the iPod in to the Apple Store and the Genius was able to determine that auto setup incorrectly applied the same server port number to both incoming and outgoing mail. When the outgoing STTP server port was changed to the correct number, it worked perfectly. So check and see what the outgoing server port is on your computer and go into the iPod setup menu and make sure it's the same number.

As I posted earlier (and to OldCodger73) a check of the settings is important to get this working. We are dealing with different devices (iPod and computer) and while one may work, with a different connection, there may be a need for other settings and for a variety of sending options: when I am around town, receiving mail is usually easy, but depending on the router I am connected to, may need me to try another send-mail server: the fault is probably not in the iPod but in the way the server has been configured.

Both my 1st and 2nd gen Touches are fine with e-mail but my iPhone would not send - I was testing by mailing from my main e-mail account to my hotmail and kept being told the address was invalid. My service provider does not support mobile mail, just popmail so could not give much advise, they turned off the smpton my mail and on the phone I am now using the gmail server under other.

I'll have a look at all the settings as described above though as that information may help my service provider if anyone else experiences the same problem.

Sadly, I joined this club a couple of days ago, but was able to fix it - but I'm not exactly sure how.

I have 2 email accounts, an IMAP and a POP. The other day, I noticed I couldn't send email from the POP account, getting that same error message. I don't know how long it was not working, maybe weeks. Like the others, mail from my Mac worked fine. I synced from my Mac computer several times, checking the command in iTunes iPod/info/advanced to replace information on this iPod during next sync only, with no improvement. I reset the whole iPod, no help. I deleted and reentered the account info manually, including the in/out server ports (which are different for me), no help.

I did notice that I had "extra" outgoing servers listed in this accounts "other SMTP servers" section, apparently due to also being on my Mac from previous account setups. I tried to delete these from the Mac and resync the iPod, no help. I tried to delete them only from the iPod, no help.

Finally, I just did another resync from iTunes, and it started working. The only difference I could see was that the "other SMTP servers" associated with this account were now turned on as well as the primary server. One of the "others" seems to match the setting for the primary, and one does not, but both are on. It works now. I don't know exactly why.

The settings in question are in Settings/Mail, contacts,calendars/(the account in question)/Outgoing Mail Server/Primary Server (on) and Other SMTP Servers (on for servers associated with this account).

Another oddity is not all of the "other" servers have a delete button, nor can some be turned off if already on, and/or vice versa, even if you try to move the on-screen switch.

I was also on a trip last month and after not being able to get this mail for days, discovered this account's authentication mode had gotten changed. This had been the same since I got the iPod in February and worked fine up to the day I traveled.

Good luck, folks.

I had this problem of not being able to send mail on the Ipod Touch (Could receive mail OK). The fix is easily sorted.

Settings, mail, contacts, calendars, select a mail account, scroll down to smtp, select the primary server, in the outgoing mail server, enter the user name and password of your smtp server.

These primary server settings can then be used by any email accounts you have on the Itouch. It works fine for me after many hours of tearing my hair out when it would not work......

There are two problems here and the touch cannot handle either one.
What a piece of junk is the email app!
Problem one is that i need port 465 to use gmail and it will not accept that in settings.

Problem two is that at home I don't need ANY authentication NO SSL for smtp but if I turn of ssl it still DEMADS a password and when you give it my charter server fails because it does not want any.

Can't they get this right or allow a REAL email application?

Is there an answer to this?

I am using WiFI NOT Mobile. I will not ever use mobile unless my life depends on it.

hi im having a problem with setting up my email account for the short cut on the main page. i had one set up for about 10 days now with yahoo as my mail carrier. then today when i went to check my emails through yahoo, which i had already done today successfully 4 times, suddenly stopped recieving incoming mail saying that my password or username is incorrect. now i havent touched my account info since i set it up 10 days ago and now it says its wrong. i can log onto my yahoo account from my laptop, desktop, and the safari browser on the itouch but when i go to set it up i am presented with an error message like this: "Cannot Get Mail. The user name or password for 'imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com' is incorrect"
i just dont get it. i have retried it numerous times now and i am not having any success. i can use my gmail without problem from the little short cut but my yahoo is my primary address and having it being set for that short cut on the main screen was such a breeze to use. please help me find out why i am having this problem, its really getting me frusturated.
