iPod touch 2nd gen won't connect to WiFi

The secured networks should be set to WPA/WPA2 encryption for the IPT to work with the network.

Having the exact same issue even if my network is set that way. What usually happens is ... the connection doesn't seem to "take". So I have to turn wi-fi on the Touch on and off or pretend to connect to other neighboring wi-fi spots and then it will finally connect.

Had the exact same issue. Ipod touch gen 1 - no problem whatsoever no matter what form of wireless encryption I used.
Gen 2 - everything but WPA works.
First time store said it was a bad board, so they got me to go to original retailer (costco) to replace it.
Came home - same exact error - WEP is fine, but WPA simply does not work.
"Unable to connect" error - even the toggle back and forth for the wifi doesn't seem to do anything either.

I have the same problem as fishb0ne, if when I try to connect, I give it 5 minutes or so, it does eventually connect. My Iphone 3g has the same settings but connects instantly. I may take end up taking it back if many others are not having this problem.

I've called Apple on this, as I'm having a similar issue. But my problem is with WEP, not WPA. Apple verified via phone that the 2nd Gen iPod Touch models support both WEP and WPA encryption. I can connect to my home network when I turn off the WEP encryption. When I turn it on and type in the password, I'm always told that the password is incorrect, and it won't connect. I know I'm not typing it in wrong, as it works on an iPhone in use in the household as well as two laptops. I worked with Apple for more than two hours, and they could not figure it out. They told me they were at a loss and they'd call me back if they could figure it out. Yeah right, that was two weeks ago. If anyone figures this out, please, please, please post the solution.

I was in the same situation for several days. I think the key was to delete the network you're trying to access and then re-enter manually. This isn't likely to work the first time but keep re-entering (countless times) the password until finally it accepts and you're in. Repeat manual set-ups possible.

Hint: if you see your neighbor's network don't access it. The Touch locks on the last used network and it was difficult for it to come back to mine.

I've exactly this same problem. I'm pretty conversant with all the required protocol etc, but just can't figure this out.

Mine says "Unable to Join Network." Ive never been able to join my own home network. My entire netwrok is wireless but the ipod is the only thing that wont connect. No idea what to do. I have a 22 character WPA password.

This has always worked for me until recently.
To fix it, I went to Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
Then try to configure your Wi-Fi.

This doesn't delete your data, but it does reset all your settings.

someone else suggested doing an update to 2.2 if you have not done so already.

My 2nd Gen iPod Touch would not connect to our guest WEP network at work. I run WPA at home and it works fine. As an experiment, I switched home back to WEP (128 bit) and it connected fine. HOWEVER, this was when I configured the router to use the hex key in slot 1. I could never connect when I configured it to use slots 2, 3, or 4. Rumor has it that some folks choose the key in slots 2,3, or 4 for some misguided reason of thinking that this is more secure than using slot 1. In reality, all WEP is insecure (but maybe better than nothing). Check which slot your router is using for the key. Still the Touch should work regardless of WEP slot used. Those at work with 1st gen Touch's have no problem while those with 2nd gen simply do not work on the WEP network (despite both set of users being on the 2.2 iPod s/w version). Hope this helps and I hope Apple has a fix. Otherwise I have to go do battle with corporate IT. 😟

i tried this as well, but it didnt' work. i have not had any success in connecting to my home wifi, using Netgear WPA, even though my laptop connects fine.

oddly enough, and please if anyone else has this problem, the Touch doesn't seem to detect my wifi unless i am in line of sight of my router!!

Have you tried pressing shift before ever letter in the passcode? Its stupid and you shouldn't have to do it, but it worked for me and my iPod and worth a try.

Here is a curve ball for everyone.

Bought two iPod Touches 2nd Gen for my two sons for Christmas. One connected to my WEP network the first time. The other will not connect at all like everyone else. I have am iPod 1st Gen that connects just fine.

The fact that one works and the other does not, when both are the same model and were bought at the same time at the same place leads me to believe that the one that does not work is defective.

We are taking it back today for a replacement. Will see what happens.

I got a 2nd gen Ipod touch for Christmas, played with it all day yesterday and today...everything was working fine until I decided to update to 2.2.

BIG MISTAKE.

Now I'm stuck and nowhere to go, but wait for Apple to get a fix.

The upgrade process corrupted my original software. NOw it wants a total restore, but the restore is not working.
